
Donald Trump's chief of staff, Mark Meadows, has said he is "optimistic" the president will leave Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Maryland today after being admitted with coronavirus on Friday, saying his condition improved overnight.
Mr Trump attracted widespread condemnation on Sunday evening over his “irresponsible” decision to order the Secret Service to take him outside the facility in his presidential motorcade to wave to supporters gathering outside to wish him well.
Among those attacking the president - who has claimed to to have “learned a lot about Covid” since his admission to hospital - was Dr James P Phillips, a physician at Walter Reed, who blamed him for endangering the lives of his security detail.
