Trump Loses Ground On Perceived Honesty, Promises And Overall Approval In New Survey

President Donald Trump's approval rating has fallen to the lowest point of his second term, while a majority of Americans now say ethics and honesty in the federal government have declined under his presidency, according to a new poll.

The Pew Research Center conducted the survey between April 20 and 26 among 5,103 U.S. adults. It found that, overall, 34% approve of Trump's job performance. The figure marks Trump's lowest approval rating since returning to the White House and comes alongside weaker public assessments of several personal traits that helped define his 2024 campaign.

One of the sharpest drops came on whether Trump "keeps his promises." Pew found that 38% of Americans say that describes him very or fairly well, down from 43% last August and 51% shortly after his reelection in November 2024. The share who describe him as "mentally sharp" also fell, from 48% last August to 44% now.

Pew found his approval among Republicans and Republican-leaning independents has dropped to 68%, down from 73% in January. Among Trump's own 2024 voters, 78% now approve of his performance, compared with 83% in January and 95% in the early days of his term.

The decline is especially visible among younger and Hispanic voters, demographics where he got significant support in 2024. Pew reported that 57% of Trump voters under 35 now approve of his job performance, compared with 87% of those 50 and older. Among Hispanic Trump voters, 66% approve, compared with 81% of White Trump voters. Pew said Trump's approval among Hispanic supporters has fallen 27 points since early 2025.

The report also points to a broader reputational hit for Washington under Trump: a majority of Americans, 56%, say the overall level of ethics and honesty in the federal government has fallen during his term. Only 19% say it has risen, while 24% say it has stayed about the same.

Optimism has cooled even among Republicans. Shortly after Trump took office in January 2025, 59% of Republicans expected ethics and honesty in government to rise. Now, 37% say that has happened, while 23% say ethics and honesty have fallen. Among Democrats and Democratic-leaning voters, 88% say ethics and honesty have declined.

Trump's ratings on major issues have also weakened. Pew found that 41% of Americans are confident he can make good decisions on immigration policy, down from 46% in August and 53% after his 2024 reelection. Confidence in his ability to use military force wisely fell to 38%, down from 46% last summer.

The economy remains one of Trump's stronger areas, but not a strong one. Pew found that 42% of Americans express confidence in him on economic policy, while more say they lack confidence. The new numbers land as Trump faces pressure on several fronts, including his handling of Iran. A separate Reuters/Ipsos poll placed Trump's approval at 34%, citing public anxiety over the cost of living and the war with Iran.
