Trump-Musk feud live updates: Trump not interested in speaking to ‘the man who has lost his mind’

President Donald Trump and Elon Musk do not appear to be speaking, despite earlier rumors that a phone call might occur following their disagreement over the former’s “big, beautiful bill,” which erupted into a public feud on Thursday.

White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles told NBC News there are no plans for a call between the two.

The president shrugged off the feud in calls with multiple TV networks on Friday morning, dismissing Musk as a “man who has lost his mind,” saying he was “not particularly” interested in reconciliation, and “the poor guy’s got a problem.”

Trump told Bret Baier at Fox News: “Elon has totally lost it.”

The president’s spat with the world’s richest man began when Musk called his signature tax and spending legislation a “disgusting abomination,” urging senators to “kill” it.

A “very disappointed” Trump hit back, claiming Elon knew the inner workings of the bill better than almost anybody and had no problem with it, something that Musk immediately refuted.

He also declared Trump would have lost last year’s election without him, alleged the files on pedophile Jeffrey Epstein are being withheld because they mention the president, and called for his impeachment.

Trump administration scrambling to rehire workers cut by DOGE

12:00 , Graig Graziosi

Departments and agencies across the federal government are scrambling to fill crucial roles left vacant over the Department of Government Efficiency’s mass firings and deferred resignation offers.

For months, DOGE has demanded departments and agencies dramatically downsize as part of efforts to cut government spending. Some employees have been incentivized to leave with early retirement offers or buyouts. Others, such as probationary employees, have been dismissed.

But now, those same departments and agencies have been left understaffed and are struggling to get workers back.

LGBTQ+ people march following rollback of queer rights

11:45 , Rebecca Whittaker

In a bid show defiance to President Donald Trump's rollback of queer rights, LGBTQ+ people from around the world will march through the streets of Washington on Saturday.

It comes after transgender people were banned from serving in the armed forces. While proponents of DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) consider it necessary to correct historic inequities, the White House has described it as a form of discrimination based on race or gender, and said its transgender policy protects women by keeping transgender women out of shared spaces.

The parade route will come within one block of the White House grounds in one of the final main events of the weeks-long WorldPride celebration.

On Sunday a more political event, dubbed a rally and march, will convene at the Lincoln Memorial, a revered space in the US civil rights movement as the site of Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech in 1963.

Voters opinions on the Trump-Musk feud

11:20 , Rebecca Whittaker

Voters were confident the feud would “blow over”, the BBC reported.

Melanie in Georgia told the broadcaster: That the "two very strong, intelligent, brilliant men" approach things from different perspectives and believes it will all "blow over".

Emana in New York said it's "very serious" for Musk to be making allegations about the president, but that she is "cautiously optimistic" it will be resolved.

While Duke Machado from Texas, said he supports Trump's "big, beautiful bill" because it represents "common sense American priorities... cutting taxes puts money back in the pockets of hard-working families".

Linda McMahon says Harvard and Columbia making ‘progress’ to meet Trump’s demands

11:00 , Graig Graziosi

Trump’s Education Secretary, Linda McMahon, praised the administration for pushing Harvard and Columbia University to make “progress” on tackling campus antisemitism.

"I have seen progress. And you know why I think we’re seeing progress? Because we are putting these measures in place, and we’re saying we’re putting teeth behind what we’re looking at," McMahon told NBC News.

“They talk a lot about it, but I think we really started to see a lot of their actions once we were taking action," McMahon added.

Steve Bannon says Trump should ‘deport Musk immediately’ and take control of SpaceX

10:40 , Rebecca Whittaker

Trump’s former advisor Steve Bannon has called for Elon Musk's deportation, referring to him as an "illegal alien" and urging President Trump to seize SpaceX.

He made these remarks on his War Room podcast, reacting to Musk's threat to decommission SpaceX's Dragon spacecraft after Trump considered canceling government subsidies to Musk's companies.

Bannon suggested Trump invoke the Defense Production Act to seize SpaceX, claiming Musk is in the country illegally despite becoming a U.S. citizen in 2002.

Speaking with the New York Times, Bannon doubled down on his deportation call and urged the Trump administration to investigate Musk's immigration status.

Musk-Trump breakup puts $22 billion of SpaceX contracts at risk

10:15 , Rebecca Whittaker

President Donald Trump and Elon Musk’s breakup has put $22 billion of SpaceX contracts at risk.

Multiple US space programs could face dramatic changes following the explosive feud on Thursday.

The disagreement was rooted in Musk's criticism of Trump's tax-cut and spending legislation that began last week.

Trump lashed out at Musk when the president spoke in the Oval Office.

Then Trump threatened to terminate government contracts with Musk's companies.

Taking the threat seriously, Musk said he would begin "decommissioning" SpaceX's Dragon spacecraft used by NASA.

Hours later, however, Musk appeared to reverse course. Responding to a follower on X urging him and Trump to "cool off and take a step back for a couple of days," Musk wrote: "Good advice. Ok, we won't decommission Dragon."

Japan-Moon Landing (ispace)

It came as Japan’s ispace failed again. It’s thought the uncrewed moon lander likely crashed onto the lunar surface during its touchdown attempt.

Tokyo-based ispace had hoped to join US firms Intuitive Machines and Firefly Aerospace in making successful commercial moon landings amid a global race that includes state-run lunar missions from China and India.

ANALYSIS: Elon Musk’s crash-out killed conservatives’ momentum — and likely guaranteed passage of Trump’s ‘big beautiful bill’

10:00 , Graig Graziosi

Eric Garcia writes:

Earlier this week, it looked like Elon Musk had delivered arch conservatives a gift when he trashed President Donald Trump’s “One Big, Beautiful Bill.”

On Tuesday, Musk called the legislation an “outrageous, pork-filled, disgusting abomination.” It seemed like a boon for some of the fiscal conservatives in the Senate like Sens. Rand Paul of Kentucky and Ron Johnson of Wisconsin who criticized the fact the bill still blows up the deficit.

Had Musk stopped there, he probably would have given fiscal conservatives additional leverage.

JD Vance defended Trump revealing 'glaring' lie about his 'temper'

09:45 , Rebecca Whittaker

Vice president JD Vance defended Trump in a post on X criticising media coverage of the feud between the president and Elon Musk.

On Friday morning he suggested coverage was wrong to imply the president was “short tempered”.

He said: “There are many lies the corporate media tells about President Trump. One of the most glaring is that he's impulsive or short-tempered.

“Anyone who has seen him operate under pressure knows that's ridiculous.”

It came after Elon Musk called for Donald Trump’s impeachment.

Report: DOGE used flawed AI tool to ‘munch’ Veteran Affairs contracts

09:00 , Graig Graziosi

Employees in the Department of Government Efficiency reportedly used a flawed artificial intelligence model to determine the necessity of contracts in the Department of Veterans Affairs, resulting in hundreds of contracts, valued at millions of dollars, being canceled.

Given only 30 days to implement President Donald Trump’s executive order directing DOGE to review government contracts and grants to ensure they align with the president’s policies, an engineer in DOGE rushed to create an AI to assist in the task.

Engineer Sahil Lavingia wrote code which told the AI to cancel, or in his words “munch,” anything that wasn’t “directly supporting patient care” within the agency.

“I’m not thinking about Elon,” Trump said. “I just wish him well.”

Trump calls Kilmar Abrego Garcia a "bad guy" after his administration reveals he's being returned to the U.S.

03:18 , Graig Graziosi

After Trump administration officials announced that Kilmar Abrego Garcia, the Maryland man who was mistakenly deported to an immigrant detention prison in El Salvador, would be returned to the U.S., Donald Trump insisted he was not mad, but thinks that Garcia is a “bad guy.”

"I think their [the DOJ] decisions are very, very good," Trump said when asked about the decision to return Garcia — and in doing so, comply with a previously issued court order. “The man has a horrible past and I can see a decision being made: Bring him back, show everybody how horrible this guy is."

He also laid into the judicial system challenging his authority with court rulings.

"Frankly, we have to do something, because the judges are trying to take the place of a president. It’s not supposed to be the way it is," Trump said. "So I can see bringing [Garcia] back. He’s a bad guy."

Mass deportations from Trump’s Big, Beautiful Bill could quietly cost U.S. over $1.4 trillion

02:25 , Graig Graziosi

Mass deportations enabled by the Trump administration’s Big, Beautiful Bill spending and tax package could cost the U.S. over $1 trillion in the coming years, as the administration is already reportedly struggling to fund its rapidly expanding immigration crackdown.

The package, which the House of Representatives passed last month, directs $168 billion towards immigration and border law enforcement agencies.

That spending, combined with the economic impact of removing scores of immigrants and more granular changes, like a potential decline in revenues thanks to the possible deterrent effect of new fees on migrants, could cost the U.S. over $1.4 trillion over the next decade, according to an analysis from the libertarian Cato Institute.

02:00 , Graig Graziosi

After Elon Musk and Donald Trump’s relationship imploded on Thursday, the X CEO launched a poll asking his followers if a third party was needed in the US to represent people who are not on the left or the right.

Musk declared on Friday night that, based on his poll results, 80 percent of respondents want a third party.

“The people have spoken. A new political party is needed in America to represent the 80% in the middle!” Musk wrote.

American politics does have third parties, but they rarely secure enough support to pose a serious challenge to Republican or Democratic candidates.

EDITORIAL: The Trump vs Musk feud will prove a historic turning point

Friday 6 June 2025 21:35 , The Independent

Lovers’ spat – or acrimonious divorce? With two individuals so volatile as Donald Trump and Elon Musk, it is impossible to tell where their “relationship”, such as it now is, will go.

We know they were once close – a bromance, indeed, where Mr Musk declared he loved Mr Trump “as much as any straight man can love another man”. The president was never quite so gushing about his friend in return, but only a few days ago, during a farewell in the Oval Office, during which Mr Musk was gifted an outsize golden key, he described Mr Musk as “one of the greatest business leaders and innovators the world has ever produced. He stepped forward to put his very great talents into the service of our nation, and we appreciate it.”

Now? Not so much.

Earlier in the day, Trump spoke with newly elected South Korean President Lee Jae-myung.

They agreed to work toward a swift tariff deal in their first phone call since Lee was elected this week, according to a statement from Lee's office.

Trump has imposed tariffs on South Korea, a long-time ally with which it has a bilateral free trade deal, and pressed it to pay more for the 28,500 U.S. troops stationed there.

Confusion as The View fails to mention Trump-Musk feud

This ranks among some of the more surprising aspects of the Trump-Musk feud...

The View hosts stunned Friday viewers after they stayed silent about President Donald Trump and his former billionaire ally, Elon Musk’s, very public, bitter feud.

The co-hosts of the popular ABC talk show have been outspoken critics of Trump and his allies for years now. However, during the latest episode, they made no mention of the headline-dominating drama between the tech mogul and the president.

Trump promises new White House ballroom will happen

Friday 6 June 2025 19:58 , Oliver O'Connell

As the world continues to obsess over his ongoing feud with Elon Musk, President Donald Trump has reiterated his promise to add a ballroom to the White House, stating that he inspected the proposed site today (reportedly attached to the East Wing).

The president, in his unique, somewhat bizarre manner, wrote on Truth Social:

Just inspected the site of the new Ballroom that will be built, compliments of a man known as Donald J. Trump, at the White House. For 150 years, Presidents, and many others, have wanted a beautiful Ballroom, but it never got built because nobody previously had any knowledge or experience in doing such things — But I do, like maybe nobody else, and it will go up quickly, and be a wonderful addition, very much in keeping with the magnificent White House itself. These are the “fun” projects I do while thinking about the World Economy, the United States, China, Russia, and lots of other Countries, places, and events. It will all be good, maybe even GREAT, depending on who is the President of the U.S.A.!

'See you in the woodchipper': Friends of USAID delivers blistering message to Musk

Friday 6 June 2025 19:24 , Oliver O'Connell

A group called Friends of USAID has posted a blistering message to Elon Musk on Instagram following his spectacular fallout with President Donald Trump.

Musk gutted the agency through his stewardship of DOGE and famously said he had “spent the weekend feeding USAID into the woodchipper.”

Here’s what they had to say:

Hey Buddy,

We know you’re feeling really angry and betrayed right now by your buddies in politics. Boy do we get it.

One moment (well, decades in our case) you’ve got the love and support of everyone on the Hill. And in the White House. Then BOOM 💥 they ghost you. They threaten to take away all your funding. Start tweeting a fire hydrant of lies. F*cking rough, man.

In your defense, it was really terrible Trump just let you stand there in front of the world and hack away at things like, you know, Ebola prevention.

Look, you were super (like SUPER) high on ketamine. So ofc you didn’t have enough sense to know what was waste from f*cking great use of tax dollars.

Trump was supposed to be your wingman, bro. He should have been the grown up in the room to say, “Whoa, whoa, whoa, sleep it off before you rip away anti-retrovirals from orphans in Africa.

We’ll see you in the woodchipper.

All the ways Musk and Trump could hurt each other as they go nuclear

An alliance between the two most powerful men in the world seemed destined to blow up into a volatile feud yet somehow held ... until it didn’t.

Within a few hours on Thursday, the public spat between Donald Trump and Elon Musk exploded into debates over the president’s impeachment, calls to launch primary challengers against Republican allies in Congress, and Musk’s accusation that the president is implicated in a sexual abuse scandal.

COMMENT: What will happen next in the Musk vs Trump civil war?

Sean O’Grady writes:

Rumours of a global shortage of popcorn are obviously exaggerated, but watching the most spectacular public bust-up since Megxit has certainly been entertaining (so far).

Aside from the endless supply of broken crockery for the media – including Musk’s very own X channel – there will actually be some real-world consequences for this very traumatic experience for both men.

It’s not clear who will be the winner. Perhaps in the end there won’t be one, and the pair, locked in a storm of mutual destruction, will be the first to disprove Henry Kissinger’s famous dictum about Iran-Iraq: “It’s a pity they can’t both lose.”

AOC takes victory lap as Trump-Elon nuclear breakup confirms everything she and Bernie Sanders warned

Friday 6 June 2025 18:11 , Oliver O'Connell

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York told The Independent that President Donald Trump and Elon Musk’s feud confirmed what she and Sen. Bernie Sanders have warned about ultra-wealthy Americans.

“I mean, it was a long time coming,” said the progressive firebrand, who is better known to many Americans simply by her initials, AOC.

The self-described democratic socialist congresswoman has spent much of the last few months traveling with Sanders, an independent socialist from Vermont by way of Brooklyn. The two have spent much of the first few months of Trump’s second presidency traveling the country as part of their “Fighting Oligarchy Tour.”

“I don't think that the whole state of the country should be with two should be concentrated in two guys with massive egos that are fighting with each other,” she said.

Trump told Vance to be diplomatic about Musk

Friday 6 June 2025 18:02 , Andrew Feinberg in Washington, DC

The Independent has learned from a source familiar with JD Vance's schedule that the vice president was actually with Donald Trump when Musk kicked off his tirade against the administration's signature legislation — and later against the president himself.

Trump and Vance also remained in contact throughout the day yesterday as the president and Musk continued posting at each other on their respective platforms.

Vance's apparent reluctance to lay into Musk with the same gusto he's shown against other adversaries appears to come from a request from Trump that the vice president speak diplomatically about Musk in any public comments on the matter.

Russia responds to Trump-Musk feud with jokes and job offers

Friday 6 June 2025 17:29 , Reuters

The feud between Donald Trump and Elon Musk provoked chatter, mockery and amusement among the ruling class in Moscow, where one senior official joked about hosting peace talks and another said Musk should bring his businesses to Russia.

“Elon, don't be upset!” nationalist senator Dmitry Rogozin, who once ran Russia's space programme, wrote on Musk's X social media site. “If you encounter insurmountable problems in the U.S., come to us. Here you will find reliable comrades and complete freedom of technical creativity.”

Dmitry Medvedev, the former president, posted: “We are ready to facilitate the conclusion of a peace deal between D and E for a reasonable fee and to accept Starlink shares as payment. Don't fight, guys!”

The public feud between the U.S. president and the world's richest man was an easy target for Russian politicians who have a history of gloating over perceived turmoil in Washington.

Margarita Simonyan, one of Russia's most powerful state media executives, mocked it as an example of “modern U.S. political culture,” adding: “Sort of like the English Industrial Revolution. Only in reverse.”

Kirill Dmitriev, head of Russia's sovereign wealth fund, who has in the past tried to interest Musk in cooperating with Russia on flights to Mars, asked on X: “Why can't we all just get along?”

He then asked Grok, X's AI chatbot, how Musk and Trump could reconcile.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, when asked about the clash, said it was an internal matter for the U.S., though he was confident that Trump would handle it.

“Presidents handle a huge number of different things at the same time, some more and some less important,” Peskov said.

Others saw a clear benefit for Russia from the feud distracting Washington.

“We can just be glad that they won't have time for us,” said Konstantin Malofeyev, a hardline nationalist tycoon, who said it was now “the best time to strike back” against Ukraine.

Trump asks Supreme Court to allow dismantling of Education Department

Friday 6 June 2025 16:54 , Oliver O'Connell

The Trump administration asked the Supreme Court on Friday to allow it to proceed with dismantling the Department of Education, an action that would place school policy in the United States almost entirely in the hands of states and local boards.

The Justice Department requested that the court to halt Boston-based U.S. District Judge Myong Joun's May 22 ruling, which mandated that the administration reinstate employees terminated during a mass layoff and cease any further actions to close the department.

The filing said the lower court lacked jurisdiction to “second-guess the Executive’s internal management decisions.”

It added: “The government has been crystal clear in acknowledging that only Congress can eliminate the Department of Education. And the government has acknowledged the need to retain sufficient staff to continue fulfilling statutorily mandated functions and has kept the personnel that, in its judgment, are necessary for those tasks. The challenged [reduction in force] is fully consistent with that approach.”

White House chief of staff says no plans for Musk-Trump call today

Friday 6 June 2025 16:08 , Oliver O'Connell

Per the network:

“There are no plans for that today," Wiles told NBC News when asked about reporting by Politico that White House aides scheduled a call Friday with the billionaire Tesla CEO to try to patch things up between the two men.

Trump is "not interested" in a call, a senior White House official told NBC News.

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said Trump is focused on the "One Big Beautiful Bill," the GOP domestic policy bill that Musk trashed, which triggered their falling out. "That's the mindset he left the Oval Office in yesterday," she said.

A Trump administration official added, “There could be anything — I’d like to de-escalate a very unfortunate situation. But there are no calls on the books, at least not now.”

Speaker Mike Johnson appeared on CNBC’s Squawkbox this morning and was inevitably asked about the Trump-Musk feud.

I really like Elon. He's a friend. I've come to truly respect his acumen ... I wish he wouldn't argue with me about how to craft legislation.”

The speaker also said he was with the president amid part of the social media feud: “I was with the president in the Oval Office yesterday afternoon as some of this was unfolding, and I can tell you, as he said in his own words, he was just, he was disappointed, and I was surprised by Elon's sudden opposition.”

He continued: “And look, I hope they reconcile. I believe in redemption. That's part of my worldview, and I think it's good for the party and the country if all that's worked out. But I'll tell you what, do not doubt and do not second-guess and don't ever challenge the President of the United States, Donald Trump. He is the leader of the party, he’s the most consequential political figure of this generation, in probably the modern era, and he's doing an excellent job for the people.”

He followed that up with a dig at Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell, whom he refers to as “Too Late.”

Tesla shares rebound on news of Musk and Trump talks after explosive feud cost firm $99bn in a day

Friday 6 June 2025 11:40 , Joe Sommerlad

Shares in Musk’s electric vehicle are poised to jump as much as 5.7 percent when stock markets open in the U.S. later today after the business took a $99bn (£73bn) hit following yesterday’s explosive feud.

The share price of the EV manufacturer tanked from more than $322 at the start of Thursday’s trading to $284 at the end of the day, more than a 14 percent drop as a result of a back-and-forth argument between the pair.

However, a ceasefire of sorts appears to have been brokered, and the two are due to meet on Friday, resulting in some investors surging back into Tesla stock.

Even so, with futures markets showing around a 5.7 percent rise in pre-trading just before 9am BST, that still means the market capitalization of Tesla (the measure of its overall value by share price) will have dropped a full $99bn in a day.
