President Donald Trump and newly elected Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney came face-to-face at the White House on Tuesday for a high-stakes meeting.
Just days after winning an election campaign with an aggressive focus on Trump, Carney said he would make a bid for a comprehensive deal on trade and national security, while hoping to reset frayed U.S.-Canada relations.
Trump, meanwhile, played the upper hand, claiming the U.S. doesn’t need ‘anything’ from Canada except ‘friendship,’ but Canada needs ‘everything’ from the U.S.
The high-stakes meeting between the two leaders is set against the backdrop of Trump’s repeated threats to annex Canada and the imposition of sweeping 25 percent tariffs.
During their Oval Office meeting, Trump once again said he would like to see Canada become the 51st state.
But, Carney pushed back, saying Canada is “not for sale” and “won’t be for sale, ever.” He reiterated that Canadians will never change their mind about joining the U.S.
“Never say never,” Trump responded.
Carney mouthed the words “never” to the press.

Trump tease 'big announcement'
21:00 , Ariana BaioDuring his meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, Trump teased that a “very, very big announcement” would be coming soon but declined to give specific details.
“We will have a very, very big announcement to make. Like as big as it gets. And I won’t tell you on what,” Trump said.
The president insisted the news was “positive” but did not explain what topic it would be on or when he would make the announcement.
On Truth Social, the president once again emphasized “a big announcement – coming soon.”
Carney says he had a 'constructive' meeting with Trump
20:44 , Ariana BaioCanadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said he and President Donald Trump had “wide-ranging and very constructive discussions” about the future of the U.S. and Canada’s economic partnership.
“I conveyed to the president today what our countries have long proven to be true: that Canada and the United States are stronger when we work together. We can get a better deal for our work, we can create more opportunities for our businesses, we can create stronger economies across North America,” Carney said during a press conference.
While taking questions from reporters, Carney said he feels better about the U.S.–Canada relationship after the meeting.
When asked how he mentally responded to Trump’s threats about annexing Canada and speaking badly about his predecessor, Carney said he is focused on the future, not the past.
Supreme Court allows Trump administration to ban transgender members of military for now
20:30 , Ariana BaioThe U.S. Supreme Court said on Tuesday it would allow the Trump administration to move forward with its ban on transgender members of the military while litigation continues.
In a 6-3 order, the conservative justices of the court sided with the Trump administration, temporarily. The administration had asked the court to intervene after a federal judge paused the policy from taking effect.
The liberal justices of the court said they dissented.
The policy, which was unveiled in February, disqualifies any person from the military with “gender dysphoria” or those who have “undergone medical interventions for gender dysphoria.”
In their argument, the government claimed that people with gender dysphoria conflicted with the military’s values.
The Human Rights Campaign Foundation called Tuesday’s ruling, “a devastating blow to transgender servicemembers who have demonstrated their capabilities and commitment to our nation's defense.”

Trump’s nominee for US Attorney in DC is in hot water
19:00 , Ariana BaioEd Martin, the president’s nominee to lead the US Attorney’s Office in D.C., is in hot water after Senator Thom Tillis of North Carolina said he would not support the nomination amid a slew of reports revealing Martin’s proximity to January 6 defendants, Russian media outlets and more.
“I’ve indicated to the White House I wouldn’t support his nomination,” Tillis said Tuesday after meeting with Martin on Monday night.
Martin, who was involved in Trump’s Stop the Steal movement in 2020, had encouraged supporters to work to “stop the steal” until their “last breath” on January 5, 2021. Since becoming interim head of the U.S. Attorney’s Office, he has also opened an investigation into the office’s handling of January 6 cases and prosecutors who worked on the cases.
“Mr. Martin did a good job of explaining the one area that I think he’s probably right, that there were some people that were over prosecuted, but there were some, 2 or 300 of them that should have never gotten a pardon. And he agreed with that, but the disagreement there had more to do. Martin has opened an investigation into the office’s handling of January 6 cases and prosecutors who worked on the cases,” Tillis told NBC News.
More than 100 former federal prosecutors who worked in the U.S. Attorney’s Office for D.C. signed a letter expressing concerns over Martin, who they believe is “unworthy of the position, incapable of the task, and an affront to the singular pursuit of justice.
Federal judge blocks the government from removing immigrants under Alien Enemies Act
18:30 , Alex WoodwardAnother federal judge has struck down Trump’s use of the Alien Enemies Act and is granting a preliminary injunction to block the government from removing immigrants under the president’s use of the law.
Clinton-appointed New York Judge Alvin K. Hellerstein says alleged Tren de Aragua gang members targeted by the law — who were sent to a “notoriously evil jail” — cannot be removed from the country “except after notice and hearing,” per the Supreme Court’s recent ruling and the Alien Enemies Act’s own language.
Hellerstein is the latest judge to block the president from using the law in, after Trump-appointed Texas judge Fernando Rodriguez ruled last week that the government’s use of the 18th century law is “unlawful.”

Trump ends bilateral meeting with Carney with criticism of US–Canada trade
17:51 , Ariana BaioAs he did with much of the bilateral meeting, Trump did not give Carney a chance to respond to a statement that he posed earlier today on Truth Social about the U.S. and Canada’s trade relationship before ending the meeting.
“Why are we subsidizing Canada $200 billion a year, or whatever the number might be – it’s a very substantial number. It’s hard for the American taxpayer to say ‘gee wiz,’ we love doing that,” Trump said before ushering media out of the Oval Office.
Carney, who appeared ready to respond to Trump’s comment, did not get the chance to answer.
It was a similar statement to that Trump made earlier in the day on Truth Social, just moments before meeting with Carney.
The president has consistently called the trade deficit between Canada and the U.S. “unfair” and believes Canada should invest more in the U.S. As a punishment, Trump has implemented tariffs on the U.S.’s northern neighbor and largest trading partner.
Throughout the meeting, Trump ranted about tariffs and Canada but jumped from point to point, refusing to give Carney much time to interject.
Trump says Houthis have ‘capitulated’ after air strikes
17:36 , Ariana BaioPresident Donald Trump announced on Tuesday the U.S. would call off airstrikes against Yemen’s Houthis, saying they had “capitulated.
“We will stop the bombings. They have capitulated but more importantly, we will take their word,” Trump said at the start of the meeting with Carney.
The Trump administration had been launching strikes against Houthi rebels who have targeted U.S. ships.
“I think that’s very positive. They were knocking out a lot of ships,” Trump said.
'Canada is not for sale': Carney shuts down 51st state rumors
17:21 , Ariana BaioAfter Trump again floated the idea of making Canada the 51st State of the U.S., Carney quickly shut down any possibility, saying, “Canada is not for sale” and “won’t be for sale, ever.”
The U.S. president once again floated the plan during the bilateral meeting, saying the possibility of merging the two countries would create a “wonderful marriage.”
But Carney quickly stepped in to say that would never happen.
“Never say never,” Trump replied.
Carney smiled and mouthed “never.”
Over the last few months, Trump has consistently teased the U.S.’s northern neighbor that the U.S. will take it over. That behavior pushed Canadians toward a more nationalist feeling, ultimately helping Carney win the election.
Trump jokes he's the 'greatest thing' to happen to Carney
17:12 , Ariana BaioPresident Donald Trump started the bilateral meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney joking that he is “probably the greatest thing that happened to him.”
After congratulating Carney on his recent win, Trump acknowledged that his recent aggressive behavior toward Canada helped Carney’s party, the Liberals, make a comeback.
The Conservative Party of Canada was almost 23 points ahead of the Liberals in the polls in January.
“I think I was probably the greatest thing that happened to him,” Trump joked.
Carney responded with a funny look to reporters.
The president called Carney’s win “one of the greatest comebacks in the history of politics,” including his own.

16:28 , Ariana BaioJust moments before he is expected to meet with Mark Carney, the newly elected Prime Minister of Canada, Trump took to Truth Social to complain about the unfair balance between Canada and the U.S.
“I look forward to meeting the new Prime Minister of Canada, Mark Carney. I very much want to work with him, but cannot understand one simple TRUTH — Why is America subsidizing Canada by $200 Billion Dollars a year, in addition to giving them FREE Military Protection, and many other things?”
“We don’t need their Cars, we don’t need their Energy, we don’t need their Lumber, we don’t need ANYTHING they have, other than their friendship, which hopefully we will always maintain. They, on the other hand, need EVERYTHING from us! The Prime Minister will be arriving shortly and that will be, most likely, my only question of consequence.”

An order from the U.S. military told freight airlines at Dover Air Force Base in Delaware and a U.S. base in Qatar to halt 11 flights loaded with artillery shells and other weapons bound for Ukraine, according to Reuters.
That verbal order reportedly came from Hegseth’s office, according to U.S. Transportation Command records reviewed by Reuters, sparking mass confusion across Washington, D.C. and in Kyiv, underscoring what officials and critics have warned is a Pentagon in disarray and driven by haphazard decision-making .

14:53 , James LiddellPresident Donald Trump has announced two national holidays for Americans to commemorate U.S. victories in the First and Second World Wars - but has made clear they won’t be days off for Americans.
The Republican made the announcement on his Truth Social platform on Monday, declaring that May 8 and November 11 would be marked as public holidays to honor the defeat of Nazi Germany in 1945 and the signing of the armistice that brought an end to the First World War in 1918 respectively.
“We won two world wars, but we never took credit for it – Everyone else does! All over the world, the allies are celebrating the victory we had in World War II,” Trump wrote.

What has Mark Carney said about Trump since succeeding Trudeau?
14:06 , James LiddellCanada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney and his Liberal Party last week won the country’s general election, a snap contest that followed the sudden departure of Justin Trudeau.
At the start of this year, the Liberals looked all but certain to drift to defeat when the country went to the polls amid growing frustration over their party’s failure to rein-in inflation under Trudeau, with Poilievre waiting in the wings ready to pounce.
But the inauguration of Donald Trump across the border saw Canadians – angered by the American’s “51st state” rhetoric and imposition of 25 percent tariffs – band together in a surge of patriotism.
After being elected on an anti-Trump platform, Carney readied for his first major test on Tuesday: a high-stakes, face-to-face meeting with the U.S. president in the Oval Office.
Ahead of the encounter, Joe Sommerlad and James Liddell have outlined what Carney has had to say about his American counterpart since succeeding Trudeau.

‘Do not expect white smoke’: What Carney said ahead of Trump meeting
13:01 , James LiddellAhead of Mark Carney’s first face-to-face meeting as Canadian prime minister with Donald Trump at the White House on Tuesday, he played down the idea of any immediate breakthroughs.
The high-stakes head-to-head between the two leaders comes after Trump’s antagonistic posturing toward Canada – including repeated annexation threats and the imposition of sweeping 25 percent tariffs.
“Do not expect white smoke out of that meeting,” Carney said in French in his first press conference as prime minister Friday, referring to the signal the Vatican sends to indicate a new pope has been selected.
Carney is expected to make a bid for a comprehensive deal on trade and national security, while hoping to reset frayed U.S.-Canada relations.
“Our focus will be on both the immediate trade pressures, and the broader future economic and security relationship between our two sovereign nations,” he added.
“My government will fight to get the best deal for Canada. We will take all the time necessary-but not more-to do so.”

Angelina Jolie’s father submitted foreign film tariff plan to Trump: ‘Make Hollywood Great Again’
11:34 , James LiddellFurther light has been shed on Donald Trump’s desire to impose tariffs on foreign-made films, with Jon Voight reportedly providing the president with a partial roadmap to aid the Hollywood film industry.
On Sunday, Trump took to social media to brand foreign film production a “National Security threat.”
Details about the controversial plan have been scarce following Trump’s rant, but Deadline has now reported that a team comprised of Voight, special adviser Steven Paul, and SP Media Group/Atlas Comics president Scott Karol has submitted a proposal to Trump at his Mar-A-Lago resort, detailing how film production in the US can be boosted.

Pence says Trump’s J6 pardons ‘sent wrong message’
11:13 , James LiddellOn his first day back in office, Donald Trump issued full commutations and pardons for more than 1,500 supporters charged with crimes connected to the Jan. 6 insurrection.
Mike Pence, who was evacuated from the U.S. Capitol during the January 6, 2021 riots, said that Trump’s act of clemency “sent the wrong message.”
“I was deeply disappointed to see President Trump pardon people that engaged in violence against law enforcement officers on that day,” Pence, who had received the John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award for defying Trump’s calls to help overturn the result of the 2020 election.
“The President has every right under the Constitution to grant pardons, but in that moment, I thought it sent the wrong message.”
After Trump continued to claim that the results of the 2020 election were “rigged,” Pence repeatedly told Trump that there was no evidence of fraud to alter the election’s outcome, according to a filing by special counsel Jack Smith late last year.
But Trump ignored his vice president, and at a rally on January 6, 2021, urged his supporters to “fight like hell” in order to “stop the steal.” Later that day, his followers stormed the Capitol to try to overturn the election results.
Phone logs revealed in Smith’s filing show that once back at the Oval Office, Trump tweeted: “Mike Pence didn’t have the courage to do what should have been done.”
While storming the Capitol, some rioters were heard chanting: “Hang Mike Pence.”
Lutnick brands Canada 'socialist regime' ahead of Trump-Carney meet
10:51 , James LiddellCommerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said that he is skeptical of striking a U.S.-Canada trade deal, calling the Canadian government a “socialist regime.”
“I mean, this is really complex, because they have been basically feeding off of us for decades upon decades upon decades, right?,” he told Fox Business Monday, a day before Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney was due at the White House for his highly anticipated first meeting with Donald Trump.
“They have their socialist regime, and it’s basically feeding off of America, I mean, the president calls it out all the time. Why do we make cars in Canada? Why do we do our films in Canada? Come on,” Lutnick continued.
“So, I think … it’s going to be a fascinating meeting, I’m glad I’m going to be there listening, but it’s going to be a fascinating meeting tomorrow. I just don’t see how it works out so perfect.”
Analysis: Trump’s disturbing vision for Gaza has inspired Netanyahu’s plan to seize the Strip
10:41 , James LiddellThe conditions that families in Gaza are being forced to endure are beyond what any of us could imagine in our worst nightmares, and the world has greeted that unprecedented suffering with a shrug, writes Chief International Correspondent Bel Trew.
Famine is stalking the population after Israel decided two months ago not to allow any aid into the besieged, blasted Strip, which is just 26 miles long and home to 2.3 million people.
Now, that bloody reality is only going to become more apocalyptic if Israel goes ahead with plans to dramatically expand its operations, as Israeli officials have said.
The plans echo Mr Trump’s own outlandish plans in the past that the Palestinians be forced out of Gaza to allow the US to turn the enclave into a “Riviera of the Middle East”.

10:07 , James LiddellAs the number of measles cases approaches four figures across 29 states, Mike Pence shared his “concerns” over Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F Kennedy Jr, a known vaccine skeptic, and his handling of the outbreak.
“Measles is a very serious disease, particularly for small children. And we should send no message across America other than to encourage parents at the time that young children are able to be vaccinated to get that measles vaccine,” Pence told CNN’s Kailin Collins Monday.

Trump and Canada's Carney ready for high-stakes White House meeting
09:53 , James LiddellNewly-elected Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is headed to the White House on Tuesday for his highly anticipated first meeting with Donald Trump, with the pair expected to discuss tariffs, economic issues and national security.
The high-stakes head-to-head comes against a backdrop of Trump’s repeated threats to annex Canada – in doing so, pledging to turn its leader into the “governor” of what he hopes to make the 51st U.S. state – and the imposition of sweeping 25 percent tariffs in violation of a free trade agreement.
Carney said he is going to Washington to “get the best deal for Canada” and to address the “immediate trade pressures.”
Trump, however, attempted to play down the meeting. “I’m not sure what he wants to see me about,” he told reporters Monday. “I guess he wants to make a deal. Everybody does.”

Trump's former VP Mike Pence scorches president's sweeping tariffs
09:14 , James LiddellDonald Trump’s former Vice President Mike Pence has the commander-in-chief’s sweeping tariffs in a blistering CNN interview.
Pence sat down with Kaitlin Collins on Monday to deliver one of his most wide-ranging critiques of the president’s second administration.
While the former vice president said he supports using tariffs to pressure China into trade talks, he argued Trump’s broader levies on allies and trade partners will “ultimately harm the American economy.”
“The administration is advancing policies that are not targeted at countries that have been abusing our trade relationship, but rather are essentially new industrial policy that will result in inflation, that will harm consumers and ultimately harm the American economy,” he said.
“My view always is free trade with free nations – that we ought to be engaging our trading partners across the free world to lower trade barriers, lower nontariff barriers and subsidies.”
Pence added that the U.S. “ought to get tough” with authoritarian regimes
Trump announces Alcatraz reopening hours after 'Escape from Alcatraz' airing
09:10 , James LiddellGood morning and welcome to The Independent’s live blog.
During a Sunday evening blitz of social media posts, Donald Trump demanded that one of the most notorious prisons in American history be reopened.
Incidentally, the president’s sudden push for the tourist destination of Alcatraz to once again become a maximum-security prison complex came just hours after a South Florida PBS station aired the 1979 classic film Escape from Alcatraz. The president spent the past weekend at his Mar-a-Lago resort, which is located in Palm Beach.
During an Oval Office press conference Monday, the president was asked why he decided that he needed to resurrect Alcatraz as a prison after it had been shuttered for decades, prompting Trump to deliver a rambling response that included him touting his own cinematic vision.
“Well, I guess I was supposed to be a moviemaker,” Trump — who recently announced his intention to implement 100 percent tariffs on foreign films — declared
