Trump live: Oversight Committee chair says he takes president at his word over Epstein signature

House Oversight Committee chair James Comer said that he would take Donald Trump “at his word” and accept the White House’s denial that the president had any involvement in a sexually suggestive note and drawing found inside Jeffrey Epstein’s birthday book.

The Texas Republican on Tuesday told reporters that his committee, which is leading an investigation into the federal government’s handling of the Epstein files, was not inclined to investigate the authenticity of a signature allegedly belonging to Trump at the bottom of the letter.

The note was part of a birthday album compiled by Epstein’s associate Ghislaine Maxwell in 2003, when Epstein and Trump were friends. Democrats on the House Oversight Committee released the birthday book Monday after subpoenaing the documents from Epstein’s estate late last month.

Hours after telling NBC News that Epstein’s birthday book was a “dead issue” on Tuesday morning, Trump doubled down, dismissing the claims as “nonsense” as he headed to dinner in Washington, D.C., flaunting his federal takeover of police and military presence in the city.

“It’s not my signature,” Trump began. “And it’s not the way I speak … And frankly, you're wasting your time.”

Epstein birthday book includes 'DJTRUMP check' joke about selling 'fully depreciated' woman to Trump

13:14 , James Liddell

A joke about disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein “selling” a woman to Donald Trump is included in documents released by Democrats on the House Oversight Committee Monday.

The OversightDems X account shared an image of Epstein holding a novelty check alongside two men and a woman, with the caption: “Epstein and a longtime Mar-a-Lago member joking about selling a ‘fully depreciated’ woman to Donald Trump for $22,500.”

The oversized check was signed “DJTRUMP,” although it does not resemble Trump’s actual signature.

Beneath it, a handwritten note which The New York Times said appears to be written by former New York real estate executive Joel Pashcow, referred to Epstein’s “early talents with money and women” and jokes that the photo shows the disgraced financier selling a “fully depreciated” woman to Trump.

The White Hosue has vehemently denied allegations that Trump signed the check. The president has never been accused of wrongdoing concerning the Epstein case.

Trump's gets heckled as 'Hitler of our time' at D.C. dinner

12:16 , James Liddell

President Donald Trump stepped out for dinner in Washington, D.C., on Tuesday evening – only to be confronted by protesters calling him “the Hitler of our time.”

Trump was joined by Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth and other senior White House officials for the visit to Joe’s Seafood, Prime Steak & Stone Crab, a short walk from 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

The trip was intended to highlight how safe the city has become since the administration moved to federalize the policing of the District of Columbia last month, sending in the National Guard and other federal agents to help local law enforcement stamp out urban crime, despite the official statistics suggesting no such step was necessary.

House Oversight Comittee chair not inclined to investigate Trump signature

11:40 , James Liddell

James Comer, chair of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, said that he would take Donald Trump “at his word” and accept the White House’s denial that the president had any involvement in a sexually suggestive note and drawing found inside Jeffrey Epstein’s birthday book.

The Texas Republican suggested that his committee, which is leading an investigation into the federal government’s handling of the Epstein files, was not inclined to investigate the authenticity of a signature allegedly belonging to Trump at the bottom of the letter.

MAGA influencer who unveiled binder of Epstein documents rips into financier's victims

11:14 , James Liddell

A right-wing influencer, who was given a binder containing Epstein Files by the White House earlier this year, posted more than two dozen Instagram stories Monday, insinuating that some survivors of the pedophile’s abuse were lying.

Jessica Reed Kraus, a popular conservative influencer and self-described “independent media,” has long sympathized with Ghislaine Maxwell, former girlfriend of Jeffrey Epstein, who has been convicted of sex trafficking conspiracy among other charges.

Earlier this year, Kraus was part of the group of pro-Trump online personalities handed exclusive access to “Phase 1” of the Epstein Files by the administration – which largely contained information already public.

To her 1.3 million followers, Kraus used her platform to mock those who survived the sexual abuse, tried to poke holes in their stories, and claimed people should not be quick to believe them.

Ariana Baio outlines what Kraus said:

Democrat attempts to pick apart White House claim of 'forged' Trump signature

10:46 , James Liddell

Massachusetts Representative Jim McGovern responded to the White House’s claims that Donald Trump’s signature was “not” in Jeffrey Epstein’s birthday book.

“So let me get this straight…,” McGovern, a Democrat, wrote on X Tuesday evening.

“20 years ago, Democrats forged Trump’s signature on a creepy birthday card to a pedophile...planted it in Epstein’s estate before Trump even ran…and then waited to release it until *after* Trump got reelected? Got it.”

MAGA Republicans have rushed to Trump’s defense after the House Oversight Committee on Monday released a sexually suggestive letter allegedly signed by the president in 2003.

Tennessee Representative Tim Burchett even pointed to possible autopen use while leaving the U.S. Capitol on Monday.

Trump, who has never been accused of wrongdoing in connection with the Epstein case, vehemently denies authoring the note.

Kimmel shreds Trump over birthday book: 'A gift that keeps on giving'

10:15 , James Liddell

As Donald Trump attempts to extinguish the flames caused by Jeffrey Epstein’s birthday book, Jimmy Kimmel has called the document “a gift that keeps on giving.”

The president has vehemently denied that it was his signature, but the Jimmy Kimmel Live! host said: “It sure does to me.”

“Especially when you compare it to other Trump signatures from that era — they’re almost exactly the same,” he continued. “They all end with a long ‘D,’ which I can only assume is Trump overcompensating for a small ‘D.’”

Petyer Mandelson: 2003 birthday message to Epstein ‘very embarrassing’

09:45 , James Liddell

British ambassador to the U.S. Lord Mandelson said a resurfaced birthday message to “best pal” Jeffrey Epstein is “very embarrassing to see and to read.”

The Birtish diplomat’s note could be seen in a 2003 “birthday book” compiled by Ghislaine Maxwell, Epstein’s associate and convicted sex trafficker, which was published by the House Oversight Committee after subpoenaing the documents from Epstein’s estate late last month.

Speaking to The Sun’s “Harry Cole Saves The West” program, Lord Mandelson said he regrets “very, very deeply indeed carrying on” the association with Epstein “for far longer than I should have done.”

He added he “never saw the wrongdoing” or “evidence of criminal activity,” and that he does not believe he is “named in the Epstein files”.

Giving his reaction to his birthday note to Epstein being published, Lord Mandelson told The Sun: “I find them very embarrassing to see and to read, but they were written before he was indicted.”

White House says it would back handwriting analysis of Trump signature

09:16 , James Liddell

The White House said it would support a handwriting expert to review a signature, alleged to belong to Donald Trump, attached to a letter in Jeffrey Epstein’s 2003 birthday book.

“Sure, we would support that,” White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said, after being pressed by a reporter on a professional review of the signature.

Donald Trump issued a three-pronged defense yesterday evening as he went to dine in Washington, D.C., flaunting his federal takeover of police and military presence in the city.

Hours after telling Jeffrey Epstein’s birthday book was a “dead issue,” Trump doubled down that the accusations he appeared in the document were “nonsense.”

“It's not my signature,” he began. “And it’s not the way I speak.”

Mike Johnson’s four-word retort to ‘bawdy’ Epstein birthday note

08:00 , Rachel Dobkin

House Speaker Mike Johnson maintained his staunch support of President Donald Trump after the House Oversight Committee released a “bawdy” letter to Jeffrey Epstein, allegedly penned by the president.

As he stepped into the U.S. Capitol on Tuesday, reporters asked the Louisiana Republican about the card, which includes a signature that looks similar to other times the president autographed letters and notes, in the decades before he was in office.

But Johnson disputed that the signature was Trump’s “Donald” Sharpie scrawl.

“I don’t — and they say it’s not,” Johnson said when asked if he supports the White House denial that Trump authored the note.

Analysis: Trump White House struggles to explain away latest Epstein bombshell

07:00 , Rachel Dobkin

John Bowden writes about the fallout after the House Oversight Committee released a birthday letter President Donald Trump is claimed to have written to the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein:

On Monday, the White House’s explanation remained firm. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt and other members of the Trump comms team declared that the signature on the letter was a forgery, though it bears an impeccable resemblance to other signatures verifiably made by the president over the years, including during his time in the White House.

“The latest piece published by the Wall Street Journal PROVES this entire “Birthday Card” story is false.

“As I have said all along, it’s very clear President Trump did not draw this picture, and he did not sign it,” Leavitt wrote on X (formerly Twitter). “President Trump’s legal team will continue to aggressively pursue litigation.”

White House says Trump still 'confident' he will win WSJ lawsuit

06:30 , Rachel Dobkin

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said Tuesday President Donald Trump is “very confident” he will win a defamation lawsuit he brought against The Wall Street Journal.

The lawsuit stems from a July article in which the WSJ reported on the existence of a birthday letter claimed to be authored by Trump and gifted to the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

Trump and the White House have vehemently denied the reporting, despite the House Oversight Committee releasing the letter to the public.

Morning Joe shreds Trump’s argument that Epstein birthday letter is a ‘Democratic hoax’

06:00 , Rachel Dobkin

Joe Scarborough, co-host of Morning Joe, has pushed back on Republicans who continue to assert that President Donald Trump’s birthday letter to Jeffrey Epstein is a “hoax,” reminding them that the initial reporting came from one of Rupert Murdoch’s conservative news organizations.

On Monday, Democrats on the House Ethics Committee released the letter that allegedly contains Trump’s signature and the hand-drawn outline of a naked woman, appearing to confirm a July report fromThe Wall Street Journal.

The White House has maintained its position that the letter is fake and it is not Trump’s real signature. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt called it a “Democrat Epstein hoax.”

But on his morning show Tuesday, Scarborough pointed out: “It is Rupert Murdoch’s own conservative media empire that is running this, not Democrats, not a Democratic hoax, not a left-wing CBS News edit or whatever they would want to say.”

House Democrat bashes Mike Johnson after he said Trump was an FBI informant

05:30 , Rachel Dobkin

Representative Jared Moskowitz, a Florida Democrat, bashed House Speaker Mike Johnson on MSNBC after he said President Donald Trump was an FBI informant in the Jeffrey Epstein case.

“Speaker Johnson gets to cosplay as speaker when Trump lets him do it. When he's not out there saying Trump's an FBI informant,” Moskowitz said Tuesday night. “I have lots of questions about that. Like, how long was he an informant? Did he wear the same makeup?”

Johnson has walked back his comment that Trump was an FBI informant.

“More than a decade ago, President Trump kicked Epstein out of Mar-a-Lago, and he was one of the only people, one of the only prominent people, as everyone has reported … that he was willing to help law enforcement go after this guy who was a disgusting child abuser, sex trafficker, all the allegations,” he told reporters Monday.

“I don’t know if I used the right terminology, but that’s common knowledge, and everybody knows that,” he added.

The White House also confirmed Trump was not an FBI informant.

Eric Trump tosses out hilarious defense of Epstein birthday drawing: ‘My father does not sketch’

05:00 , Rachel Dobkin

Eric Trump ran to the friendly confines of Newsmax Monday night to offer up a laughable defense of the “bawdy” sketch that his father allegedly sent to Jeffrey Epstein for the convicted sex offender’s 50th birthday.

“I can tell you my father does not sketch out cartoon drawings,” the presidential scion declared, despite the incontrovertible fact that multiple Donald Trump doodles have been sold at auction houses.

The younger Trump’s denial comes as the White House world throws everything against the wall to explain away the publication of the “birthday book” sent to Epstein in 2003, which includes a letter that features an imagined conversation between Epstein and the president framed by a hand-drawn figure of a naked woman. Meanwhile, the president’s alleged trademarked scribbled signature is placed in a location to mimic a woman’s pubic hair.

The president has furiously denied composing the letter, which was first reported by the Wall Street Journal in July, calling it a “fake thing” and “nonexistent.” After the WSJ first broke news about the card’s existence, the president filed a $10 billion lawsuit against the paper, its reporters and owner Rupert Murdoch, claiming that “no authentic letter or drawing exists.”

Columnist calls White House strategy on the Epstein saga 'very flimsy'

04:30 , Rachel Dobkin

Niall Stanage, the White House Columnist for The Hill, has called the Trump administration’s strategy on the fallout from documents related to the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein “very flimsy.”

“The Jeffrey Epstein saga is causing new problems for President Trump,” Stanage wrote in a piece published Tuesday. “This time, it’s raising questions about the strategy he and his aides have adopted in denying any involvement in a book prepared for the deceased financier and sexual predator’s 50th birthday,” Stanage wrote in a piece published Tuesday.

“The emphatic strategy was risky from the start — and now looks very flimsy, indeed. As a consequence, the president has given fresh impetus to a story that has disquieted even parts of his base. It’s a story Trump is eager to move past — yet he keeps doing things that put that goal further out of reach.”

The subpoenaed Epstein files: Everything we know about latest release, including 50th birthday book with ‘Trump sketch’

03:40 , Rachel Dobkin

A trove of documents from the investigation into late pedophile Jeffrey Epstein was released Monday by a congressional committee.

The bombshell document drop included a 238-page book compiled for Epstein’s 50th birthday in 2003, with dozens of contributions from the disgraced financier’s rich and powerful friends, along with “girl-friends.” Among the biggest revelations was a sexually suggestive hand-drawn naked woman and cryptic message, allegedly by President Donald Trump. Epstein’s last will and testament, and lengthy address book were also released.

The documents were made public by the House Oversight Committee, after it subpoenaed Epstein’s estate last month, amid ongoing outcry over the Trump administration’s failure to keep a promise made by the president and release all the files related to the case.

Epstein, 66, died by suicide in a New York City jail cell in 2019 while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges involving abuse of girls as young as 14. Epstein was previously arrested and charged with soliciting prostitution in Florida in 2006. The charge sparked a federal investigation, but Epstein struck a plea deal that protected him from further charges. In exchange, he pleaded guilty to state charges and registered as a sex offender.

Republican response to the Epstein birthday card: ‘I am so goddamn sick of being asked’

Wednesday 10 September 2025 00:00 , Rachel Dobkin

Republicans in the House of Representatives would rather not talk about the “bawdy” birthday note that President Donald Trump supposedly sent to Jeffrey Epstein for his 50th birthday party.

The House Oversight Committee had released many of the documents related to the late convicted sex offender regarding his trafficking of girls and young women. But some of the members of the committee don’t want to talk about the card that Trump is alleged to have signed and sent.

“I am so goddamn sick of being asked about a f*****g birthday card,” Rep. Nancy Mace (R-S.C.) told The Independent on Tuesday.

“Give me a break. What about the women who've been fighting for justice for 30 years and still don't have it? How does writing about a birthday card do anything to get them justice? It doesn't.”

The Reuters/Ipsos poll published Tuesday found 53 percent of Americans disapprove of Trump’s handling of the economy, while 36 percent approve. Just 30 percent of respondents supported the president's handling of the cost of living for U.S. households.

The poll was conducted from last Friday to Tuesday. The latest jobs report, which was released Friday, showed the economy added just 22,000 jobs in August, which was worse than experts had expected.

House Oversight staffers to meet with lawyer for Epstein estate in New York, report says

Tuesday 9 September 2025 23:00 , Oliver O'Connell

NBC News reports that a bipartisan group of staffers from the House Oversight Committee will travel to New York City tomorrow to meet with lawyers for Jeffrey Epstein's estate and view unredacted versions of the documents the estate is providing to the committee. The network cites a source familiar with the visit.

The materials the estate is transmitting are redacted, but committee staff members will be able to view the original unredacted versions in person.

“As agreed with the Committee, the Co-Executors will make the original 'birthday book' and unredacted versions of documents, records, and other materials available to Committee members and their staff for their personal examination and review,” the lawyers for the Epstein estate wrote in their production cover letter to the committee yesterday.

The lawyers described the materials sent yesterday as the “first production of documents.”

Asked today when the next batch of documents will be turned over, one of the lawyers, Daniel Weiner, told NBC News in a statement: “As agreed with the House Oversight Committee, the Estate is making a rolling production of documents responsive to the Committee’s subpoena. We hope to be producing additional documents soon.”

White House doubles down on Trump claim domestic violence should not be counted as a crime

Tuesday 9 September 2025 22:30 , Oliver O'Connell

The White House defended Donald Trump’s remark about domestic violence and crime statistics on Tuesday after the president seemed to downplay the former’s significance on Monday.

On Monday, the president spoke about his federalized occupation of Washington D.C. with National Guard troops, while claiming that he’d turned the city into a “safe zone”. During his remarks, made at the Museum of the Bible downtown, Trump went on a side tangent about what he referred to as “lesser” infractions: “things that take place in the home”, in his words.

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt denied that the president was downplaying the importance of prosecuting domestic violence at her briefing on Tuesday, but instead of walking back Trump’s remarks insisted that her boss was somehow making a point that members of the media were using domestic violence incidents to distract from efforts to combat street crime.

Rep. Mace says focus on Epstein birthday card doesn't help victims get justice

Tuesday 9 September 2025 20:48 , Oliver O'Connell

The Independent asked Republican Congresswoman Nancy Mace of South Carolina about her thoughts on the release of the documents sent to the House Oversight committee by the Epstein estate.

“I am so goddamn sick being asked about a f***ing birthday card. Give me a break. What about the women who've been fighting for justice for 30 years and still don't have it? How does writing about a birthday card do anything to get them justice? It doesn't,” she said.

Mace earlier expanded on why she was forced to walk out of a meeting with survivors of Jeffrey Epstein's empire of sexual abuse last week.

In a video posted on X on Sunday, the South Carolina representative — who is also running for governor there — described how one of the women's testimony triggered a trauma reaction stemming from Mace's own history of being raped.

“I was not prepared for what I was walking into. I thought I was, but really I wasn't,” Mace said.
