Trump takes over White House briefing with binder of ‘accomplishments’ on anniversary of one year in office: Latest

President Donald Trump made a rare appearance in the White House press briefing room to mark the first anniversary of his return to office.

Trump arrived at the press briefing room on Tuesday afternoon with a book listing his accomplishments throughout his first year back in the White House. He spoke to reporters for more than 90 minutes in a rambling speech that spanned several topics, including immigration, the Minneapolis shooting, and the Nobel Peace Prize.

The last year has been defined by Trump’s record-breaking executive orders, mass deportations and changes to the White House.

Over the last year, Trump has signed more than 200 executive orders covering dozens of issues. He also shattered the record for most executive orders signed on the first day in office.

Trump has also implemented a nationwide immigration crackdown. In the last year, the Trump administration has deported more than 500,000 people, according to a New York Times data analysis.

The president also used his first year to reshape the White House. He has remodeled rooms, demolished part of the East Wing to make room for a new ballroom and added gold decor to the Oval Office.

Trump latest: Key points

  • Donald Trump marks one-year anniversary amid chaos and strife on multiple fronts
  • Trump says he 'felt horribly' about Minneapolis shooting and says Renee Good's father is 'tremendous fan'
  • More than 500,000 people deported during Trump's first year back in office

‘I blame ourselves’: Trump faults own press team as he takes over briefing room for low-energy, nearly 90-minute Year 1 recap

22:52 , Andrew Feinberg

About 12 hours after he arrived back at the White House from last night’s college football championship in Florida, Trump made a rare appearance in the James Brady Briefing Room for what he thought would be a victory lap marking a year back in the Oval Office.

The aim was clearly celebratory; the performance was not.

“I wanted to do it. My people work so hard, ‘Sir, don't think it'll look too good.’ I'm telling you, it's a good thing, and it'll be hotter than ever. No, but I decided not to do that. I'm joking, you know, when I say that. I was not going to call it the Gulf of Trump,” he added.

Trump appears tired at start of press briefing

18:59 , Andrew Feinberg

President Donald Trump appears to be extremely tired at the start of what is likely his second or third appearance in the briefing room during his second term.

He arrived back at the White House at 2:10 A.M. ET today after attending last night's college football national championship game.

Trump spent the final year of his first term making frequent, hours-long appearances in the room, but according to one person close to him who has spoken to The Independent, he now prefers to take questions in the Oval Office because he can remain seated and not expend as much energy.

Trump says ICE 'must start talking about the murderers ... that they are capturing'

17:00 , Katie Hawkinson

President Donald Trump said officials from the Department of Homeland Security and Immigration and Customs Enforcement “must start talking about the murderers and other criminals that they are capturing and taking out of the system.”

“They are saving many innocent lives! There are thousands of vicious animals in Minnesota alone, which is why the crime stats are, Nationwide, the BEST EVER RECORDED! Show the Numbers, Names, and Faces of the violent criminals, and show them NOW,” Trump wrote Tuesday on Truth Social.

“The people will start supporting the Patriots of ICE, instead of the highly paid troublemakers, anarchists, and agitators,” he added.

White House endures a year of gold leaf and wrecking balls as Trump plays decorator in chief

15:40 , Andrew Feinberg

Don’t try telling Donald Trump that all that glitters is not gold.

Since returning to the White House one year ago, the president has often invoked past commanders in chief as models for some of his more controversial actions or policies.

He frequently cites William McKinley to justify his profligate use of tariffs and has spoken adoringly of Andrew Jackson and other expansionist presidents who acquired new territory for the U.S. — as he would like to do by possibly annexing Greenland.

But for those who pay attention to what’s going on in and around the White House’s historic walls, Trump’s first year back in power may well bring to mind another name, that of the Greek mythological ruler, King Midas.

Truth Social: Trump leaks personal messages from Macron and Rutte responding to Greenland moves

10:00 , Joe Sommerlad

The president spent the eve of his one-year anniversary back at the White House up late on social media.

His two most recent messages were attacks on the U.K., one of his country’s longest standing overseas allies, and on his Democratic enemies in Minnesota, claiming without evidence that Sunday’s demonstration at a St Paul church was carried out by “professional” agitators:

“Shockingly, our ‘brilliant’ NATO Ally, the United Kingdom, is currently planning to give away the Island of Diego Garcia, the site of a vital U.S. Military Base, to Mauritius, and to do so FOR NO REASON WHATSOEVER. There is no doubt that China and Russia have noticed this act of total weakness. These are International Powers who only recognize STRENGTH, which is why the United States of America, under my leadership, is now, after only one year, respected like never before. The UK giving away extremely important land is an act of GREAT STUPIDITY, and is another in a very long line of National Security reasons why Greenland has to be acquired. Denmark and its European Allies have to DO THE RIGHT THING.”

“Just watched footage of the Church Raid in Minnesota by the agitators and insurrectionists. These people are professionals! No person acts the way they act. They are highly trained to scream, rant, and rave, like lunatics, in a certain manner, just like they are doing. They are troublemakers who should be thrown in jail, or thrown out of the Country. The first to go should be Walz, and Fake Sleazebag, Ilhan Omar, who is supposedly worth over $30 Million Dollars, even though she’s never had anything but a Government job. Investigate these Corrupt Politicians, and do it now!”

Before that he published what appeared to be personal text messages sent to him by Nato Secretary-General Mark Rutte and French President Emmanual Macron, which will surely make them think twice about casual diplomatic messaging in future, and a meme of himself planting a U.S. flag in Greenland’s soil.

Here’s more from James C Reynolds.

President Donald Trump observes the first anniversary of his return to the White House Tuesday but does so in a highly fraught moment, facing problems on multiple fronts.

A year on from his swearing-in at the Capitol Rotunda on January 20, 2025, half of voters now say Trump has made the economy worse, compared to just 35 percent who see an improvement under his stewardship, according to the latest Wall Street Journal poll of American citizens. Meanwhile, his approval rating continues to languish.

The president is also engaged in a heated feud with his European allies over his threat to impose steeper tariffs unless they support his determination to acquire Greenland, which he insists must become a U.S. territory in the interests of national security.

Tensions also continue to rage in Minneapolis over the surge of federal immigration agents into Minnesota in support of Trump’s crackdown on undocumented migrants, which have boiled over into mass protests following the fatal shooting of Renee Good, a 37-year-old mother-of-three, earlier this month.

The president will set out for the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, later today where his remarks Wednesday will be closely watched.

Here’s Brendan Rascius to take a look at the last 12 months, which Norman Ornstein, a scholar at the American Enterprise Institute, told The Independent has amounted to “a sprint toward an autocracy.”
