US President Donald Trump has doubled down on his criticism of Hollywood director Rob Reiner after he and his wife Michele Singer Reiner were found dead inside their home in Brentwood, Los Angeles.
The Los Angeles Police Department described the deaths on Sunday as “an apparent homicide” and TMZ reported that the pair suffered lacerations consistent with a knife. Rob and Michele’s 32-year-old son Nick has since been arrested and charged with murder.

Trump’s comments about Rob Reiner
While tributes flowed on social media for the acclaimed filmmaker — who directed more than 20 films including When Harry Met Sally, Misery and A Few Good Men — Trump took to his social media platform Truth Social to criticise Rob.
He blamed the director’s death on his strong dislike and “raging obsession” with him, describing it as “Trump Derangement Syndrome”.
“A very sad thing happened last night in Hollywood,” he wrote. “Rob Reiner, a tortured and struggling, but once very talented movie director and comedy star, has passed away, together with his wife, Michele, reportedly due to the anger he caused others through his massive, unyielding, and incurable affliction with a mind crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME, sometimes referred to as TDS.
“He was known to have driven people CRAZY by his raging obsession of President Donald J. Trump, with his obvious paranoia reaching new heights as the Trump Administration surpassed all goals and expectations of greatness, and with the Golden Age of America upon us, perhaps like never before.
“May Rob and Michele rest in peace!”

Rob Reiner’s political activism
In addition to being a Hollywood actor and director, Rob was a political activist and longtime Democratic Party supporter. He endorsed Hillary Clinton in the 2008 election and donated $10,000 to a political action committee supporting her 2016 presidential campaign. He also endorsed Joe Biden for president in both the 2020 and 2024 elections.
Rob was extremely vocal against Donald Trump, describing the former reality TV host as “mentally unfit” and “the single most unqualified human being to ever assume the presidency of the United States”.
He was also developing a docuseries called The Spy and the Asset about Trump’s relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin before his death.
Meanwhile, Rob’s wife, Michele, had her own history with Trump as she photographed him for the cover of his 1987 book The Art of the Deal.

Celebrities and politicians call out Trump’s post
Trump’s post about Rob and Michele’s deaths has since been heavily criticised online, with many calling it his “worst social media post of all time”.
“What a disgusting and vile statement,” actor Patrick Schwarzanegger posted on X (formerly Twitter).
“How is this OK? How is it acceptable to respond this way about anyone’s death, particularly coming from the President of the United States? Is THIS not deranged?” singer Sheryl Crow wrote on Instagram.
Both sides of politics have also called out Trump for injecting politics into a family tragedy, with Florida Democrat and US House member Maxwell Alejandro Frost calling him “a despicable piece of garbage”.
“He’s just lost it. Now saying Rob and Michele Reiner caused their own murder because they didn’t support him. So sick,” Connecticut Democrat and US senator Chris Murphy added, while California Democrat and US House member Zoe Lofgren said it was “a new low for this petty, hateful man”.
Georgia Republican and US House member Marjorie Taylor Greene also posted on X: “This is a family tragedy, not about politics or political enemies.”
Kentucky Republican and fellow US House member Thomas Massie said Trump’s post was “inappropriate and disrespectful discourse about a man who was just brutally murdered” and challenged anyone in his party to defend Trump’s commentary.
Trump doubles down on his comments
Speaking to reporters at the White House on Monday, Trump defended his comments and described Rob as “a deranged person”.
“Well, I wasn’t a fan of his at all. He was a deranged person as far as Trump is concerned,” he said, referring to himself in the third person.
“I was not a fan of Rob Reiner at all, in any way shape or form. I thought he was very bad for our country.”
Former US president Barack Obama has since paid tribute to Rob and Michele and said he and his wife Michelle were “heartbroken” by their passing.
Former US president Bill Clinton said he and his wife Hillary “will always be grateful for their friendship, unfailing kindness, and support” and former Vice President Kamala Harris described the couple as “dear friends”.
