Trump impeachment trial: Senators clash on first day of proceedings as Democrats push for more witnesses

The US Senate has rejected repeated attempts by Democrats to secure new evidence on the first day of President Donald Trump’s impeachment trial.

As the third impeachment trial in US history began on Tuesday and ran late into the night, senators voted along party lines, 53-47, to block attempts to subpoena a cache of documents from the White House and witness evidence.

Mr Trump is charged with abuse of power and obstructing the congressional inquiry. He denies wrongdoing.

Meanwhile, at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Mr Trump dismissed the accusations against him as “just a hoax” as he clashed with teen climate campaigner Greta Thunberg.
