Donald Trump’s impeachment defence team are preparing to take the Senate floor on Friday in a bid to defend their client against the charge he incited the failed insurrection at the US Capitol last month.
But there are reports of growing tensions between Mr Trump and his team, with the former president said to want lawyer Bruce Castor to have minimal involvement following his disastrous appearance on Tuesday during opening arguments.
On Thursday, Democratic impeachment managers rested their case against the ex-commander-in-chief, claiming he was “overwhelmingly guilty” and warning that a vote to acquit would mean it could happen again.
It comes as close ally and former UN ambassador Nikki Haley, who is widely believed to have presidential ambitions of her own, turned on Mr Trump, saying he “let us down”.
“He went down a path he shouldn’t have, and we shouldn’t have followed him, and we shouldn’t have listened to him. And we can’t let that ever happen again,” she said.
