Trump impeachment: Hollywood reacts with dismay following president's acquittal

Hollywood figures have responded with dismay after Donald Trump was acquitted by the Senate in his impeachment trial on Wednesday (5 February).

The Republican-controlled Senate voted to acquit Trump on both articles of impeachment that he faced. Just one senator from either side broke ranks, with Utah Republican Mitt Romney becoming the only senator in American history to vote to remove a president of his own party.

Mark Hamill, John Legend, Bette Midler and Don Cheadle are among the celebrities to respond to the news on Twitter, with many celebrating Romney’s decision.

“Thank you @MittRomney for putting #CountryOverParty & voting your conscience,” wrote Hamill on Twitter. “Is there any doubt the outcome would have been much different had it been a secret ballot? #CowardlyGOP #HistoryIsWatching.”

“Good for Mitt Romey,” added Legend.

Midler tweeted: “#Trump’s learned nothing from the experience of being impeached. He will continue his criminal ways & then double down, knowing he’s gotten away with it once again. He will be like Robert Mugabwe, dictator of Zimbabwe, who lasted 40 YEARS, dying at 95, with his nation in ruins.”

Cheadle, meanwhile, simply responded to Trump’s tweet saying that Romney should be expelled from the Republican party with a crying meme.

A lot has changed in the past two months: in December, Hollywood reacted with delight when Trump became the third US president in history to be impeached by the House of Representatives.

Trump is expected to deliver a public statement at noon on Thursday (6 February) to discuss "our Country's VICTORY on the Impeachment Hoax!", according to the president’s Twitter.
