US President Donald Trump hailed the King as “the greatest king in my book” when he said farewell to his guest as the state visit drew to a close.
Charles and Camilla visited the White House for the final time to say goodbye to the president and first lady Melania Trump, waiting at the historic building’s South Portico overlooking the famous lawns.
As the foursome posed for a picture in front of the gathered media, Mr Trump pointed at Charles and told the press: “He’s a great king. The greatest king in my book.”
The president has heaped praise on “fantastic” Charles and the UK’s historical ties with the US throughout the four-day state visit and at one point was photographed affectionately touching the King’s knee.
He has also revealed details of personal conversations and his thoughts about the King’s thinking on major topics.
Mr Trump claimed during Tuesday’s state dinner speech that Charles had agreed with him on the need to prevent Tehran getting a nuclear bomb.
And the following day in the Oval Office the president said the King “would have probably helped” the US in its military offensive against Iran.
During the photocall reporters seized on a quiet moment to call out questions to the King, who looked hesitant.
When one reporter asked “Your Majesty, what do you think of the Trump renaissance here in DC, all the improvements?” Charles smiled as he said “Ah, we’ll see.”
When the reporter asked the King what his favourite part of the visit was, Mr Trump stepped in and said: “We’ll talk later.”
After the president, the first lady and their royal guests spent around seven minutes inside, they emerged and shook hands and kissed as they said goodbye.
As the limousine pulled away Camilla rolled down her window and stuck her hand out to wave a final farewell.
The president said to the press as the car left: “Really great people. We need more people like that in our country.”
Later the King and Queen held a respectful vigil to pay tribute to British and American war heroes when they visited Arlington National Cemetery in Washington.
Charles laid a wreath, while Camilla placed a posy at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, the final resting place of an unnamed US war hero from the First World War.
