Trump given permission to use UK bases to defend Strait of Hormuz

  • The UK has given President Donald Trump the green light to use its RAF Fairford and Diego Garcia bases for raids on Iranian missile sites.
  • The raids will target sites Iran is using to attack ships in the Strait of Hormuz. The agreement was announced after ministers met to discuss the latest developments in the Middle East.
  • Downing Street stated that any action taken from RAF bases would be considered 'collective self-defence' and would not draw the UK into a wider conflict.
  • The decision comes after Trump criticized NATO allies, calling them 'cowards' for their inaction on helping to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
  • The US president said Nato was complaining ‘about the high oil prices they are forced to pay, but don’t want to help open the Strait of Hormuz’ and called on them to help with ‘a simple military maneuver’ to protect the crucial waterway.
