Trump fuels fears of meeting with his 'friends' Boris and Farage on State Visit

Donald Trump has fueled fears that he will be meeting with Boris Johnson and Nigel Farage during his State Visit to the UK.

The US President referred to both of the controversial Brexiteers as "friends" and "very good guys".

Asked if he would meet the pair on his trip to the UK next week he replied "well I may".

Mr Trump will spend three days on a trip that includes lunch with the Queen at Buckingham Palace and meetings with Prime Minister Theresa May .

Mr Trump's visit last year drew tens of thousands of demonstrators to the streets policed by around 10,000 officers.

He said today: "Nigel Farage is a friend of mine, Boris is a friend of mine. They're two very good guys, very interesting people.

"Nigel's had a big victory he's picked up 32% of the vote starting from nothing and I think they're big powers over there I think they've done a good job."

But the President would not be drawn on whether he would back Boris Johnson - just one of 11 Tory MPs competing for the top job.

He said: "I like them, they're friends of mine, I haven't thought about supporting them, maybe it's not my business to support people but I have a lot of respect for both of those men."

Last week a cabinet minister warned the US President could also deal Tories a blow amid political turmoil by endorsing Nigel Farage.

“You can imagine him saying 'I could do a deal with these guys’,” the Cabinet minister told the Mirror.

Trump described the former Mayor of London as a friend during his visit to the UK in July 2018.

The president also said Johnson would make a good prime minister, comments that irritated May at the time and for which he apologised.

Mr Trump's schedule for Tuesday includes a business breakfast at St James's Palace with Mrs May and senior business leaders from the US and UK.

He will then visit Downing Street, before hosting a dinner at the residence of the US ambassador when he will be joined by the Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall.

Although the US President met the Queen on his visit last year it was not a full State Visit.
