Trump follows Iran threat with bizarre 'change of pace' tweet about mixed martial arts

Donald Trump has posted a bizarre tweet about mixed martial arts in the middle of a threatening screed towards Iran.

After posting a series of tweets suggesting that Iran could pay "a very BIG PRICE" for what he alleged was their involvement in the Baghdad embassy attack, he went on to the tweet about the Ultimate Fighting Championship.

Captioning the post "Just for a little change of pace", he linked out to a post from the UFC asking fans to vote on their favourite knockout of the year.

The UFC had shared their tweet hours before Mr Trump shared it, and it is not clear why he did so in the middle of his furious posts about the events in Iraq.

Immediately after the post, he went back to talking about the embassy attack, hailing it as the "anti-Benghazi".

In the initial posts, the president had posted what appeared to be serious threats towards Iran.

"The U.S. Embassy in Iraq is, & has been for hours, SAFE!" he wrote. "Many of our great Warfighters, together with the most lethal military equipment in the world, was immediately rushed to the site. Thank you to the President & Prime Minister of Iraq for their rapid response upon request....

"....Iran will be held fully responsible for lives lost, or damage incurred, at any of our facilities. They will pay a very BIG PRICE! This is not a Warning, it is a Threat. Happy New Year!"

The tweet about the UFC followed just 15 minutes later. Five minutes later came another post in which Mr Trump appeared to delight in the operation at the embassy and referred to it as "anti-Benghazi".

Mr Trump has a close relationship with the UFC, and visited one of its fights last month. During that event, he was booed by fans who had also taken posters mocking the president.

After those events, he used his account to retweet obscene, supportive comments from a UFC fighter.
