Supporters of Joe Biden purchased more champagne bottles on Saturday 7 November than the last two New Year’s Eve celebrations combined, say liquor store owners in Washington DC.
Rodmans Food & Drug Store in downtown Washington claims to have sold more bottles of fizz in 12 hours than during any previous holidays, according to Newsweek.
Elsewhere in the city, two drug store chains told the US publication that they had witnessed a “deluge” of Biden supporters buying celebratory champagne on Saturday.
Online images show happy revellers popping corks and swigging from bottles in the US capital, following the news that Joe Biden had won the most votes in the presidential election.
“I've now been sprayed with tear gas and champagne in the same spot,” commented Andrew Beaujon, senior editor of The Washingtonian.
He tweeted a selfie showing him and Biden supporters celebrating near Lafayette Park, where National Guard troops used tear gas and pepper balls to disperse demonstrators for a Trump photo-op back in June.
Similar celebrations took place across the US, with an estimated 8,000 people gathering in New York’s Time Square to mark the historic day.
Bartenders and liquor store owners across the Big Apple told similar stories, with Liam Johnson, an NYC bartender tweeting, “We sold out of champagne at the bar already so....”.
Meghan McCain, journalist and daughter of previous Republican candidate, John McCain, tweeted: “I can't imagine if my Dad lost and our hometown of Phoenix erupted in jubilation with people pouring champagne all over each other and singing and dancing.
“Maybe the Trump's don't give a shit about their hometown but...yeeeesssshhh...," she wrote.
Donald Trump has continued to claim that the election was marred by fraud, but has provided no evidence to support these allegations.
Neither has the President conceded defeat, although Mr Biden has made plans to occupy the White House in January 2021.
