Former President Donald Trump has issued a challenge to President Biden to coordinate a presidential debate, following both candidates expressing interest in the idea for the 2024 election.
Trump penned a letter to Biden via his social media platform, Truth Social, proposing a debate and expressing his readiness to participate in any location chosen by Biden. He suggested venues such as the White House or New York City for the debate.
President Biden, in response to Trump's challenge, stated during a ceremony celebrating the WNBA Champions, the Las Vegas Aces, that he is willing to debate and urged for the debate to be set up.
Despite the back-and-forth challenges between the two candidates, no concrete progress has been made in organizing the debate. The Commission on Presidential Debates has confirmed that it will stick to its original schedule, with the first debate scheduled for September 16 at Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas.
The CPD has stated that its criteria for candidate qualification will be applied in early September, following which debate invitations will be extended to qualifying candidates. The second debate is set to take place in Petersburg, Virginia, on October 1, and the third in Salt Lake City on October 9. Additionally, a vice presidential debate is scheduled for September 25 in Easton, Pennsylvania.
