Donald Trump’s attempt at brokering peace between Israel and Iran unravelled almost as quickly as it began this week. On Monday afternoon, Trump took to his social media platform to make a bold, six-word announcement: “CONGRATULATIONS WORLD, IT’S TIME FOR PEACE!”
He followed up with more posts, claiming credit for a “Complete and Total CEASEFIRE” and telling NBC News in an exclusive interview that he had personally made the ceasefire happen.
“I think the ceasefire is unlimited. It’s going to go forever,” he said, adding that he didn’t believe Israel and Iran “will ever be shooting at each other again”.
But by Tuesday morning, the mood had changed dramatically. Reports started surfacing that both Israel and Iran were accusing each other of violating the ceasefire. Trump’s tone shifted, and he began urging Israel to show restraint online, even going so far as to post, “DO NOT DROP THOSE BOMBS. IF YOU DO IT IS A MAJOR VIOLATION. BRING YOUR PILOTS HOME, NOW!” on his Truth Social account.
He then said that there was no breach of ceasefire and instead Israel was “doing a friendly ‘Plane Wave’ to Iran”.
Speaking to reporters on the White House lawn, Trump sounded exasperated, to say the least. He said, “I think they both violated it. I’m not sure they did it intentionally. They couldn’t reign people back. I don’t like the fact that Israel went out this morning at all, and I’m going to see if I can stop it.”
He then dropped an f-bomb, saying, “We basically have two countries that have been fighting so long and so hard that they don’t know what the fuck they’re doing. Do you understand that?”
He also called both countries’ behaviour “ridiculous”.
The ceasefire itself was reportedly brokered with help from Qatar and the US. It followed Iran launching missiles at a US base in Qatar, all of which were intercepted. Iran said the strikes were in retaliation for US bombings on Iranian nuclear sites.
The situation caused travel chaos, with multiple countries closing their airspace and flights being diverted. Qatar even filed a complaint with the United Nations, calling Iran’s actions a “flagrant violation of [Qatar’s] sovereignty”.
Iran’s health ministry says at least 610 people have been killed by Israeli strikes since June 13, including top military commanders and nuclear scientists. Israel’s strikes have also reportedly killed 28 people in Iran, the first time large numbers of Iranian missiles have penetrated Israeli defences.
The office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed that Israel had struck a radar installation near Tehran but said it had refrained from further strikes.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said his country would respect the ceasefire “if the Zionist regime [Israel] does not violate the ceasefire”.
Both sides continue to blame each other for breaches, and the situation remains tense.
