WASHINGTON _ Woody Johnson, Republican megadonor and owner of the NFL's New York Jets, is reportedly being considered for a top foreign ambassador post in the new year.
Johnson is the most recent in a long line of Trump financial backers to be tapped for possible high-level government positions, and, according to the New York Post's Page Six, is in the running to be named U.S. ambassador to the United Kingdom.
Originally campaign finance chairman for former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, Johnson threw his weight behind Trump after Bush dropped out in the name of party unity, telling the New York Times it was important to get behind the Republican nominee.
Johnson then went on to co-chair a joint Trump campaign-GOP finance committee before settling into his most recent role on the president-elect's inauguration team. He also served as national finance chairman for the 2008 Republican National Convention.
The report comes as the National Football League looks to grow its influence in England, possibly with the addition of a new, London-based franchise.
Johnson would become the second NFL owner-turned-ambassador, joining former ambassador to Ireland and Pittsburgh Steelers Chairman Dan Rooney, who was appointed by President Obama in 2009.
