Trump confirms he will nominate Lance Schroyer as next ICE director

  • Donald Trump has announced his nomination of Lance Schroyer to be the next director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement ( ICE ).
  • Trump praised Schroyer's 29 years of law enforcement experience and stated he would significantly increase the detention and deportation of "Illegal Alien Criminals".
  • The nomination coincides with a new Department of Homeland Security (DHS) inspector general investigation into detainee deaths at ICE facilities.
  • Over 50 people have died in ICE custody since Trump's return to office, with deaths reportedly increasing every year since 2022, prompting the DHS review.
  • The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights has called for independent oversight and accountability for deaths in ICE custody, while a DHS spokesperson denied any "spike in deaths".
