Trump claims he never promised ‘no new wars’ as he defends action in Iran

Donald Trump said he never guaranteed that the US would not get involved in any new wars, despite stating he would not get involved during his 2024 presidential campaign.

Mr Trump repeatedly criticised the US’s involvement in Middle Eastern countries. "Under Trump, we will have no more wars, no more disruptions, and we will have prosperity and peace,” he said during his campaign against Kamala Harris.

Speaking to NBC's Kristen Welker on Sunday (7 June), the US president denied ever promising any such thing. “First of all, I didn’t guarantee no war. Why would I have built the strongest military in the world?”

He also defended the ongoing war in Iran, stating that it is not an “endless war” and will be over soon. “We’re there for a few months and the threat is largely over.”
