Trump and Mamdani to meet at the White House on Friday

President Trump and New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani will meet at the White House on Friday, both sides confirmed on Wednesday night.

Why it matters: Trump and Mamdani have been critical of each other for months, and the president threatened to withhold federal funding for NYC if the democratic socialist won the mayoral election.

  • Trump again incorrectly referred to Mamdani as a "Communist" in his Truth Social announcement Wednesday night.

Driving the news: "Communist Mayor of New York City, Zohran 'Kwame' Mamdani, has asked for a meeting," Trump wrote in his post.

  • "We have agreed that this meeting will take place at the Oval Office," added the president, who endorsed in the mayoral race former N.Y. Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who ran as an independent after losing the Democratic primary to Mamdani.

What they're saying Dora Pekec, a spokesperson for Mamdani, said in an emailed statement soon after Trump's post that Mamdani planned to meet with Trump in Washington, D.C., as "is customary for an incoming mayoral administration."

  • Pekec said Mamdani planned "to discuss public safety, economic security and the affordability agenda that over one million New Yorkers voted for just two weeks ago."
