NEW YORK _ President Donald Trump's attorneys agreed Thursday to allow his accountants to gather documents for Manhattan District Attorney Cy Vance, should a judge rule the prosecutor's subpoena for his tax returns is valid.
Vance's prosecutors had desperately sought to avoid delay of their investigation into Trump's hush money payments during the 2016 campaign. Judge Victor Marrero said that was an "inevitability" given the likelihood of an appeal.
The new agreement reflected that reality. Vance vowed to not enforce the subpoena until 1 p.m. on Oct. 7 or two business days after Marrero rules. Trump's accountants at Mazars, meanwhile, will gather the paperwork Vance seeks, expediting the handoff if it ever happens.
The government must notify the judge on Monday whether it plans to intervene in the case over Trump's tax returns and other closely kept records. The full scope of Vance's investigation is unclear, but it involves how the Trump Organization documented the hush money payments to porn star Stormy Daniels and former Playboy model Karen McDougal.
