President Donald Trump's administration is offering buyouts to federal employees to quickly reduce the government workforce. The deadline for employees to decide is Feb. 6. The buyouts are available to all full-time federal employees except for military personnel, U.S. Postal Service employees, and those in immigration enforcement and national security roles. If accepted, employees would receive approximately eight months of salary.

An email detailing the buyout offer was sent to over 2 million workers. The offer includes exemption from in-person work requirements until Sept. 30, as the administration aims to bring employees back to offices. Employees interested in accepting the offer can reply to the email with the word 'Resign.'

Employees who choose not to accept the buyout will be required to return to their offices full time, aligning with the administration's goal to end remote work due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The memo emphasizes the expectation of excellence at all levels and mentions potential downsizing of federal agencies.

Workers who opt for the buyout can apply for other government positions in the future. As of November, the federal government employed over 3 million people, making up nearly 1.9% of the nation's civilian workforce. The average tenure for a federal employee is close to 12 years, with the majority having worked between five to 19 years.

The largest concentration of federal workers is in the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia. California, Texas, and Florida also have significant numbers of federal employees. The proposal has faced criticism from the head of the American Federation of Government Employees Union, who believes the buyouts are an attempt to pressure disloyal workers to leave.
