Trump administration adds more questions to citizenship test

  • The US citizenship test has been revised, largely mirroring a harder 2020 version implemented by the Trump administration.
  • The updated test includes 28 new questions, increasing the total possible questions to 128, and requires applicants to answer 12 out of 20 questions correctly, up from six out of 10.
  • Questions are now more complex, often asking 'why' or 'how' instead of simple factual recall, and fewer geography questions or those with one-word answers are included.
  • United States Citizenship and Immigration Services stated the changes ensure applicants are fully assimilated and contribute to the country, with the new test taking effect for applications filed from October 20.
  • Critics, such as the National Immigration Law Center, argue these changes will make it more difficult for long-term residents to achieve US citizenship.
