Trump abruptly cancels housing affordability bill signing and calls it of ‘minor importance’

  • President Donald Trump abruptly canceled a scheduled signing ceremony for the bipartisan 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act on Wednesday, less than an hour before it was set to occur at the Capitol.
  • Trump announced on Truth Social that the ceremony was "hereby cancelled until such time as we pass the desperately needed SAVE AMERICA ACT," referring to his proposed voter ID bill , which he deems a "national emergency."
  • His decision was fueled by frustration over Republican senators' refusal to advance his voter ID legislation and his assertion that the housing bill was "of minor importance" compared to achieving lower interest rates.
  • The housing bill had previously passed both the Senate by an 85-5 margin and the House with a 358-32 vote, indicating that Congress could easily override any potential veto from Trump.
  • This cancellation is the latest in a series of instances where Trump has demanded Congress pass his anti-voting bill, which includes stringent proof of citizenship requirements, bans on postal balloting, and restrictions on transgender women in sports.
