Trump 1st leader to make state visit to Japan after new emperor's enthronement

Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga announced that U.S. President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump will make a state visit to Japan from May 25-28.

The trip will mark the first state visit by a foreign leader following the enthronement of the new emperor on May 1.

During his stay, Trump will hold talks with Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, including over a round of golf. On May 26, the president will attend the final day of the Summer Grand Sumo Tournament and offer his congratulations to the winner.

"The fact that Mr. and Mrs. Trump will be the first state guests during the new Reiwa era symbolizes the unwavering bonds between the United States and Japan," Suga said.
