'Truly shocking': Government-funded feral pest controllers charged with animal cruelty

A review is underway into the employment of two feral pest controllers who allowed their dogs to kill a fox and a pig.

The WA Government is reviewing the employment of two South West feral pest controllers who let their dogs attack and kill a pig and a fox.

A 52-year-old Boyup Brook man and a 48-year-old Mullalyup man were given spent convictions in Manjimup Magistrates Court yesterday after pleading guilty to animal cruelty and firearm charges.

Police said the men, who were arrested after a search of two properties last week, allowed dogs under their control to attack and kill both a fox and pig.

The pair were employed by Blackwood Biosecrurity Inc, a group that manages declared plant and animal pests funded by local and state government.

The group covers an area stretching from Arthur River in the north east to Scott River on the south coast.

It was not specified whether the incidents took place while the men were working under contract.

'Truly shocking' says minister

Agriculture and Food Minister Alannah MacTiernan said the men's contracts with the group would be reviewed.

"These events are truly shocking," she said.

"We applaud the WA Police for acting swiftly in their investigation and laying charges."

Ms MacTiernan said the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) would investigate further.

"DPIRD is now reviewing, as a matter of urgency, the circumstances around the employment of these men by Blackwood Biosecurity Inc and the checks and balances recognised biosecurity groups have in place for their employees," she said.

The ABC understands one of the men has already resigned.

Blackwood Biosecurity Inc has been contacted for comment.
