True Romance review – still in love with a classic crime romp

Patricia Arquette and Christian Slater in Tony Scott’s 1993 classic True Romance.
Patricia Arquette and Christian Slater in Tony Scott’s 1993 classic True Romance.

A welcome theatrical rerelease for this deliciously pulpy 1993 romp that saw Tony Scott bringing a burnished visual sheen to an early Tarantino script. Christian Slater and Patricia Arquette are the Badlands-style lovers who head to California with a stash of stolen cocaine, but the show is stolen by Dennis Hopper and Christopher Walken, whose “vendetta kinda mood” head-to-head became one of the most memorable sparrings of 1990s cinema. Infinitely preferable to Oliver Stone’s Natural Born Killers, this is the best film Quentin Tarantino never made.

One of the original trailers for True Romance.
