The true location of a civil war battlefield has been revealed - a mile from where historians previously believed it to be.
The clash between Cavaliers and Roundheads in March 1646 was thought to have taken place on a ridge near Stow on the Wold, Glos.
Fighting continued in nearby streets until the royalists were forced to surrender.
Locals put up a stone memorial to mark the hillside spot in 2002.
But a new investigation by the Battlefields Trust has uncovered 17th century musket balls in fields much closer to the town.
Researchers are hoping to confirm their theory with another survey this autumn.
Trust research co-ordinator Simon Marsh, who has excavated the area four times, believes the monument is in the wrong place.
He said: “We were essentially looking for lead shot on the ridge near the monument but we didn’t find anything.
"All the evidence we have uncovered so far suggests the battle took place at a different location about a mile away.”
