'True legend' - Tottenham stars pay tribute to Diego Maradona as icon dies aged 60

Tottenham players have been paying tribute to footballing legend Diego Maradona.

Maradona passed away today, aged 60, after suffering cardiac arrest just weeks after having successful surgery on a brain blood clot.

The Argentine FA confirmed in a statement its "deepest sorrow for the death of our legend," adding: "You will always be in our hearts."

Alberto Fernandez, the president of Argentina, added: "You took us to the top of the world. You made us immensely happy. You were the greatest of them all. Thank you for having existed, Diego. We're going to miss you all our lives."

Tottenham players past and present have paid their own tributes on social media with the club holding a small place in the legacy of the legend as Maradona played in Ossie Ardiles' testimonial in 1986, donning a Spurs shirt in front of 30,000 fans at White Hart Lane.

In 2017, Maradona attended Spurs' game against Liverpool at Wembley with Ardiles, and was introduced to all the squad in the dressing room.

Gary Lineker added: "Reports from Argentina that Diego Armando Maradona has died. By some distance the best player of my generation and arguably the greatest of all time. After a blessed but troubled life, hopefully he’ll finally find some comfort in the hands of God. #RipDiego"

Current Spurs star Dele Alli wrote: "Such sad news. A true legend of the sport. RIP Diego Maradona." Harry Kane, meanwhile, added: "Privileged to have met him. Very sad news. RIP Diego Maradona." Many of the Tottenham stars actually met the Argentine icon when he visited for a Spurs game in 2017.

Maradona will be remembered as a true great of the game with his greatest achievement on the pitch being his and Argentina's World Cup-winning campaign of 1986.

During his club career, the former attacking midfielder played for Boca Juniors, Barcelona, Sevilla and Napoli among others, winning two Serie A titles and a UEFA Cup along with other silverware.

He retired as a player in 1997 two years after returning to Boca Juniors but would go on to become a manager.

The highlight of his management career will be the two years he spent in charge of his national team from 2008-2010, taking them to the World Cup in South Africa in his final year.

Maradona continued his managerial efforts, spending time at three different clubs across Argentina and Mexico in the last three years, but it's for his performances as a player he will be remembered and as one of the greatest to ever grace the game.
