Truckie charged over toddler's road death

A truck driver will face court next year over a fatal crash on Melbourne's Calder Freeway. (AAP)

A truck driver has been charged over a multi-vehicle crash that killed a two-year-old girl on a Melbourne freeway earlier this month.

The truck carrying grain collided with several vehicles on the Calder Freeway near Diggers Rest on December 6.

A Caulfield South toddler, who was sitting in a back passenger seat in one of the cars, died at the scene.

Four others inside that vehicle were injured, including a one-year-old girl, 35-year-old man and a 37-year-old woman.

The woman remains in hospital in a stable condition, while the man and girl have since been released.

A 62-year-old South Melbourne man driving a Toyota Hilux became trapped under the truck until he was freed by emergency services.

He was also taken to hospital but has since been released.

Two others in another vehicle escaped serious injury.

Major Collision Investigation Unit detectives on Wednesday charged the truck driver, a 42-year-old Donald man, with culpable driving causing death.

He was released on bail and will appear at Melbourne Magistrates Court on May 18.
