Truckers put the brakes on moral outrage over Clarkson comments

So here we go again. Jeremy Clarkson is the latest target for the moral busybodies following his comments on Sunday night's Top Gear - see it here at 31:00 - in which he suggested that truck drivers only cared about fuel prices ... and murdering prostitutes. As of this morning the BBC has had 517 complaints and there are a fair few column inches in today's papers taking Clarkson to task. But hang on. While the Road Haulage Association has got the hump, truckers don't seem to be joining the lynch mob. In fact it seems they are stubbornly refusing to be offended. Spoilsports! Here's Eddie Stobart chief executive, Andrew Tinkler: "This particular reference was used to comically exaggerate and make ridiculous an unfair urban myth about the world of lorry driving, and was not intended to cause offence. They were just having a laugh. It's the 21st century, let's get our sense of humour in line." Will Shiers, the editor of Truck & Driver magazine, adds that the "bulk of the UK's drivers who saw the programme loved it". "Yes, a small number of drivers were offended by the murdering prostitute reference, but they really are in the minority," Shiers adds. "On the whole I thought the show was really entertaining. If anything it succeeded in demonstrating to car drivers just how difficult it is to drive a truck." It's all a bit shockingly sensible.
