Truckers given fresh warning by police following rat-run sting

Police have warned they will fine more more heavy goods vehicles who use a Cardiff suburb as a rat run.

Officers have issued tickets to two HGVs who decided to use Radyr as a thoroughfare - despite signs warning truckers not to enter the village.

Residents claim large trucks and wagons are causing major problems by passing through when they shouldn't be.

Local group The Love Our Villages wants to introduce the speed limit to 20mph in Radyr and Morganstown to 20 mph.

Group spokesman Gordon Tucker said: "Booking these HGVs is a good thing. Whether it can solve the problem altogether is a different matter."

Police issued two tickets to HGV drivers on March 22 - before taking a photo of the vehicles and posting the results on a Twitter page.

Since then, officers have carried out patrols.

The HGVs booked by the police are not thought to relate to the developers of Plasdwr- the 7,000-home "garden city" being built alongside Radyr.

Redrow, lead developer of Plasdw, said it logged all visiting vehicles’ registrations and checks with every contractor which route they took to travel to site, and installed 22 large road signs reminding drivers of the weight restrictions last year.

A South Wales Police spokeswoman said: "Drivers found to be breaching weight restriction are issued with traffic offence reports.

"We are aware that road safety is a concern for the local community and we carry out regular traffic operations across the Fairwater Policing Sector as often as possible.

"In the meantime we remind all drivers to abide by road traffic laws for the safety of all road users and to avoid being fined or receiving points on their licence."
