Crash unnoticed for 11 hours after semi plunges off motorway, killing driver

Police are still piecing together details of a truck accident south of Brisbane, where a man died after the semi-trailer he was driving plunged off the Logan Motorway, south of Brisbane.

The truck was heading west on the motorway and rolled over a concrete barrier, falling about 10 metres into a cemented culvert area.

The crash happened at Tanah Merah about 11:30pm on Tuesday, but police were not notified until 10:40am (AEST) on Wednesday.

They closed the eastbound lanes of the motorway and reduced westbound traffic to one lane.

Acting Senior Sergeant Benjamin Reeve said the first person to notify police was walking nearby the crash site.

"Where the truck has become stationary, it would most certainly have been out of vision for the local motorists and it was identified by the person who contacted police [Wednesday] morning," Acting Senior Sergeant Reeve said.

"Where the truck was positioned it would be highly unlikely that motorists travelling at 100 kilometres per hour would see that truck."

He said investigations were continuing into how the crash occurred.

"At this point we're unable to determine cause, but our Forensic Crash Unit is currently investigating possible cause," he added.

"If anyone in the area of the motorway westbound near Tanah Merah has any dashcam footage or may have recorded anything suspicious at 11.30pm, they should ring Crimestoppers."

All lanes have now been reopened to traffic.
