They were among 15 rangers of the 44th Ranger Regiment in Pattani's Sai Buri district who were on leave and being transported to Hat Yai airport in Songkhla.

While the truck was nearing Ban Khok Sai in tambon Chanong of Chana district, the truck slid off the slippery road full of potholes hidden under water, and overturned.

Nine rangers were injured: Veerayuth Chimlert, Pornpong Boonchum, Chalermlarp Piluk, Pithak Pankakho, Suriyo Sathiarapapsakul, Pattarapong Matchula, Anwa Adae, Wuthichai Sukprasert and another who had yet to be identified. One of them, Veerayuth, was knocked unconscious after his neck was hit by a steel bar. He was admitted to Chana Hospital.
