Truck goes up in flames near Kilmarnock retail park as fire crew race to dramatic incident

A truck has gone up in flames near a Kilmarnock retail park this afternoon.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service was called to wasteground near the town's Academy Street.

The land sits not far from the Soccerworld complex and Queen's Drive Retail Park which are both close to the busy A71.

One fire engine is in attendance and three firefighters could be seen tackling the blaze.

Smoke was billowing from the scene with some people looking on from nearby vantage points.

One eyewitness told Ayrshire Live: "The lorry is well alight and there is smoke everywhere. You can smell it before you can see it.

"It also looks as if the firefighters have had to cut through a gate to get into the area."

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson told Ayrshire Live: “We were alerted at 2.06pm on Wednesday, June 23 to reports of a vehicle on fire at waste ground near Academy Street, Kilmarnock.

“Operations Control mobilised one appliance and firefighters extinguished a fire affecting a derelict commercial lorry.

“There were no reported casualties and crews left after ensuring the area was made safe.”
