Truck driver killed woman and boy, 14, after being distracted by mobile apps

A trucker who caused a fatal motorway pile-up was playing a game on his mobile phone seconds before the smash.

James Majury killed Anne Kerr, 50, and 14-year-old Joe Cairns when he ploughed into their school minibus. Five others in multiple vehicles were hurt.

Majury, who was warned he faces a long jail sentence, had been playing Hustle Castle as well as using apps before the horrific crash in January last year.

Prosecutor Francis McEntee told a court the 32-year-old had been “voluntarily distracted”.

He added: “It was not simply text messages but access to Sky Sports, Facebook and Hustle Castle which is a fantasy game.

"The defendant reacted no more than half a second before the point of contact.”
