Truck driver involved in four-vehicle crash 'devastated' by boy's death

A child died in the massive pile-up on the M5 yesterday.

A truck driver charged over a horror crash in southern Sydney in which a 10-year-old boy died is "devastated" about the tragedy, his lawyer says.

The truck and three cars collided on the M5 at Riverwood yesterday morning and the boy died at the scene.

The boy's sister, 13, was taken to Sydney Children's Hospital with fractured ribs and head injuries.

Pushminder Grewal, who was driving the Prime mover, appeared in Bankstown Local Court Thursday afternoon wearing a dark t-shirt and jeans.

He faces multiple charges, including dangerous driving occasioning death and negligent driving.

Outside court, the 26-year-old's lawyer, Elias Tabchouri, said Mr Grewal maintains the collision was a terrible accident.

"This is a tragic matter on all fronts for everyone involved," Mr Tabchouri said.

"He is devastated about what has happened here.

"He did not wake up that morning thinking this would happen to him or that family."

The collision was captured on the truck's dashcam, and the ABC understands part of the case will involve the truck's brakes.

Mr Grewal's matter was adjourned to Friday, when he will make an application for bail.

The other drivers involved in the smash suffered minor injuries, including a fractured wrist.
