Truck driver 'had €900,000 hidden at farmhouse', court hears

A truck driver was charged with laundering almost €900,000 in crime cash after gardai found bags of money hidden behind brickwork at a farmhouse, a court heard yesterday.

Officers swooped on the Co Cavan property on Sunday after watching Jonathan O’Connor ride quad bikes around the fields with two children, Dublin District Court was told.

It was claimed O’Connor admitted he had a bag containing €88,100 in his car.

A full search of the premises found €782,520 and £14,840 sterling in 19 plastic bags behind brickwork in outhouses.

The court heard the accused pointed out two of the locations.

Father-of-three O’Connor, 28, from Elm Road, Donnycarney, Dublin, is accused of possessing proceeds of crime at the farmhouse in Dromore, Bailieboro, Co Cavan.

Objecting to bail, Det Gda Enda Gormley told Judge Bryan Smyth the offence carries a sentence of up to 14 years.

He said the investigation was ongoing and further charges could be brought.

O’Connor’s bail was set in his own bond of €1,000 along with a €25,000 independent surety.

Judge Smyth remanded him in custody with consent to bail on these terms to appear at Cloverhill District Court on Thursday.
