Truck driver found guilty over Dubbo crash that killed two

Two people died in the crash on the highway between Gilgandra and Dubbo.

A Queensland truck driver has been found guilty of dangerous driving that killed a young couple stopped at a roadworks site.

Robert Crockford, 51, was driving a semi-trailer when it crashed into several cars stopped on the Newell Highway between Gilgandra and Dubbo in 2018.

Hannah Ferguson, 19, and her boyfriend Reagen Skinner, 21, both died. Ten other people were injured, including a two-year-old girl.

Crockford pleaded not guilty to 12 charges, including two counts of dangerous driving occasioning death.

On Monday, a jury found him guilty on all counts in the District Court in Dubbo.

Tears as verdict delivered

The trial started on March 3 and the jury had been deliberating for almost a week.

The families of Ms Ferguson and Mr Skinner were in court when the verdict was read out.

There were tears on both sides of the gallery.

Crockford's lawyer, Jack Tyler-Stott, had argued his client passed out from a coughing fit and was not conscious and in control of the vehicle at the time of the crash.

Judge Nanette Williams refused bail for Crockford on the basis that he was likely to get a prison sentence, lived in Queensland, and she could not be satisfied that the risk of flight could be addressed by bail conditions.

Crockford will be sentenced in May.
