Truck driver extradited to NSW over crash that killed six-year-old Rian Strathdee

A truck driver will be extradited from Queensland to New South Wales after a warrant for his arrest was issued over a fatal hit and run in which a six-year-old boy was killed 18 years ago.

In November 2004, Rian Strathdee and his family were travelling along the Hume Highway at Sutton Forest in a station wagon when they were hit by a truck.

The car was propelled 40 metres and rolled several times down an embankment.

Rian died at the scene and his brother – then aged 11 – was taken to The Children’s Hospital at Westmead with facial injuries, cuts and bruising.

His mother – then aged 46 – who was driving at the time, also suffered extensive cuts and bruising and his father was airlifted to hopsital with neck injuries.

Inquiries at the time were unable to identify the vehicle and driver and, following an inquest in 2006, the Coroner could not determine an at-fault vehicle or driver.

During the inquest Rian's father, Laurie Strathdee, called on the truck driver to come forward.

"We don't know why it happened. It shouldn't have happened and we want the driver or anyone who knows what happened to come forward and to tell us," he said.

The Crash Investigation Unit reviewed the case in 2016 and on Sunday NSW police issued an arrest warrant for a 59-year-old man from the Brisbane suburb of Bellbird Park.

Ipswich Magistrates court granted a request from CIU officers that the man be extradited to NSW.

He is due to arrive at Sydney Airport on Tuesday night.
