Truck driver charged over deadly accident in Victoria's north-east

A truck driver involved in a crash which claimed the lives of a mother and her young son in Victoria's north-east has been remanded in custody after a brief court appearance.

The 31-year-old Mooroopna man faced the Wangaratta Magistrates' Court today after being charged by the Major Collision Investigation Unit following the November 2 crash.

The accused was driving a truck on the Murray Valley Highway at Brimin, near Rutherglen, when the vehicle collided head-on with a car.

Amanda Kilmister, 37, and her 12-year-old son, Harrison both died at the scene.

Her husband, 44-year-old Paul Kilmister, and their sons, eight-month-old Austin and two-year-old Morgan, were also injured in the crash.

The family, from nearby Bundalong had been out for dinner and were returning to home.

The truck driver has been charged with 15 offences including two counts of culpable driving, two counts of dangerous driving causing death and two counts of negligently causing serious injury.

He is also facing charges of dangerous driving causing serious injury, reckless conduct endangering life and serious injury, and exceeding the prescribed concentration of drugs while driving.

He is expected to appear in court again on March 14, 2019.
