Truck driver allegedly on wrong side of Sturt Highway charged with drink driving

A truck driver whose B-double was allegedly spotted swerving into oncoming traffic on a major regional highway was almost four times the legal blood-alcohol limit, police say.

The man has been charged with offences including drink driving, after police received reports his truck was veering onto the wrong side of the Sturt Highway in South Australia's Riverland on Thursday.

The truck had also reportedly collided with concrete bollards on the side of the road as it travelled eastwards towards Barmera.

Police were called about 2:10pm and said about 10 minutes after arriving, officers spotted the truck "driving erratically" and attempted to stop it.

But the driver — a 61-year-old man from New South Wales — allegedly initially continued driving, before being halted at Monash.

"The driver was subsequently breath tested and allegedly produced a blood-alcohol reading of 0.196," police said.

The man was arrested and was charged with exceeding the prescribed concentration of alcohol, driving under the influence and aggravated driving without due care.

He was handed an immediate 12-month loss of licence and was bailed ahead of a scheduled appearance in the Berri Magistrates Court next month.
