70-yr-old, grandson, 6, killed as truck hits, drags scooty for 2km in UP's Mahoba district

KANPUR: In a rerun of Delhi’s Kanjhawala hit-and-drag incident, a 70-year-old man and his six-year-old grandson died after their two-wheeler, a scooty, got stuck in a dumper truck and was dragged for nearly 2km on Kabrai Road in Mahoba district on Saturday.

A video of the accident has gone viral on social media in which sparks emanating from the two-wheeler can be seen. Some people riding two-wheelers parallel to the truck are also seen asking the truck driver to stop. But he keeps driving on. The driver has been arrested and the truck seized.

Police said that a retired teacher, Udit Narayan Chansauria, and his grandson, Satvik, a student of KG at a city school, were going to the market on a two-wheeler when they were hit by the speeding truck.

While Udit died on the spot, Satvik and the two-wheeler got stuck in the dumper truck and dragged for nearly two kilometres.

Eyewitnesses said that after the accident, people who were on motorcycles tried hard to stop the truck but the driver kept dragging the two-wheeler in an attempt to escape.

“A few residents even hurled bricks and stones at the truck after which the driver stopped the vehicle near Kidari gate. The boy had died by then,” an eyewitness said.

The irate mob caught the driver and thrashed him.

SDM (Sadar) Jitendra Kumar, CO (city) Rampravesh Rai and other officials reached the spot and initiated investigations.

The man and his grandson were taken to the district hospital where doctors pronounced them dead on arrival. The bodies were sent for post-mortem examination.

SP, Mahoba, Aparna Gupta, said, “We have arrested the driver and seized the dumper truck. As the accident was horrific, we have booked the driver under Section 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of the IPC.”

Traffic remained disrupted on the highway for about an hour.

Police said that Satvik’s mother, Ruchi, is a government teacher, while his father, Neeraj, is a pharmacist at a private hospital.
