A trailer on a truck carrying 2,200 piglets has overturned on an Ohio highway.

Rescue agencies and volunteers have been attempting to corral the piglets after the crash on Monday night on Route 35 in Xenia township, near Dayton.

Crews picked up the squealing pigs by their hind legs and took them to Greene County Fairgrounds. Authorities say 300 to 400 pigs were killed, with some of the animals running into a nearby wooded area.

Approximately 1,500 piglets have been captured, with a few hundred at large.

Dean Fox, the Xenia fire chief, told reporters: “There are quite a few pigs that got out and ran from the accident. They’re in the woods. I don’t think we’ll ever get all of them, I really, really don’t. We’ll try as hard as we can to retrieve all of them, but we probably won’t retrieve all of them.”

Authorities said the driver of the truck, which was travelling from South Carolina, lost control and slammed into a guardrail. He was not hurt. A female passenger was taken to a hospital with minor injuries.

People in Xenia have been asked to contact the police if they discover piglets on their property.
