Troye Sivan catfished by someone pretending to be Greta Thunberg

Troye Sivan and his manager Dani Russin were catfished by someone pretending to be the environmental activist Greta Thunberg.

Someone posing as Thunberg’s father contacted Russin about a hypothetical project called "Stars Save the Earth".

The series was said to have seen Thunberg partner up with notable people for a range of planet-saving activities, including saving animals in Africa with Prince Harry and swimming with sharks with Leonardo Di Caprio

After a number of messages were exchanged, Sivan was given what he thought was Thurnberg’s number. The singer messaged the contact on WhatsApp saying: “Hi Greta! It’s Troye Sivan here. Just wanted to say how incredible the work is that you’re doing.

I’m so inspired by you. Here to help however I can.”

Russin’s boyfriend was the one to point out that it might be a hoax. To test it, Sivan and his manager went onto YouTube to listen to interviews with Thurnberg’s Dad and Russin realised it wasn’t the same voice she had heard earlier that day.

“I died laughing. To me, this was the most hysterical thing,” Sivan said in a video posted onto Twitter.

“The fact that my ego was big enough to be like, ‘Yeah, Greta Thunberg kind of wants to chill, she’s a big fan, she wants to save the planet together.’ It just completely mortified me and made me want to die and also cry laughing.”

The final screenshot Sivan posted onto Twitter was a simple message from “Greta” asking “So, how are you?” He captioned it with a series of skull emojis.
