Troy Parrott's Tottenham debut ends in shock defeat to Colchester United

Troy Parrott made his competitive Tottenham debut tonight under the watchful eye of Mick McCarthy’s coaching staff.

But the Premier League giants suffered a shock exit from the Carabao Cup after losing 4-3 on penalties to League Two Colchester United.

New Ireland Under-21 star Parrott started at the JobServe Community Stadium with Ireland assistant Terry Connor keeping tabs from the stands.

McCarthy said recently that he would only pick the highly-rated striker, 17, for Ireland if he was playing in Tottenham’s first-team.

On a frustrating night for Spurs, Parrott saw a 16th minute shot flash across the face of goal before deflecting wide for a corner.

Playing up front, the Dubliner was starved of service and found himself dropping deep in the hope of impacting the game.

And in the second-half, he got on the end of an Eric Dier cross but could not keep his shot down.

Parrott was then replaced by Denmark star Christian Eriksen in the 66th minute and then looked on from the bench as Tottenham were turfed out in a shootout.

McCarthy will name his Ireland squad for the crunch Euro 2020 qualifiers in Georgia and Switzerland next Tuesday.

But he has decided to scrap announcing a large provisional squad and will instead reveal his panel proper.
