Troy Parrott a major doubt for Ireland's Slovakia qualifier after suffering fresh injury

Troy Parrott is a doubt for international duty after suffering an ankle injury on his Millwall debut.

A role with the Ireland Under-21s in their key qualifier away to Italy on October 13 is more likely than the senior squad’s Euro 2020 playoff in Slovakia on October 8.

Parrott was named in Stephen Kenny’s first squad for last month’s Nations League games but only because Sheffield United ace David McGoldrick was ruled out of the Bulgaria clash.

As it happens, Parrott then had to pull out of the double-header with a muscle injury and was replaced by Preston North End’s Sean Maguire.

Kenny will name his senior squad on Tuesday for Slovakia and the Nations League games against Wales and Finland.

But Parrott - who was replaced at half-time in Millwall’s 2-0 Carabao Cup defeat by Burnley on Wednesday - could be a target for Under-21 boss Jim Crawford.

Millwall manager Gary Rowett said: "It doesn't look great but we'll see. Troy got a kick on the ankle early on.

“He’s a young lad, desperate to play and he has been devastated to be injured because he wants to play games.

"You could see he was struggling movement-wise. He probably should have come off (earlier) or I probably should have taken him off.

"Even when he's struggling he wants to stay out there, so everything he’s doing is for the right reasons.

“But he has probably got to learn if he makes the injury worse, he will be out for longer.
Hopefully it is not too serious and he’ll be available soon."
