Troy Baker’s thoughts on The Last of Us changed after becoming a father

Most people feel strongly about The Last Of Us ending one way or another. That includes Joel’s voice and motion capture actor Troy Baker, who has a different perspective on the finale after having a child.

Spoiler warning: if you haven’t finished The Last of Us Part 1, maybe do so before reading further. We’re talking about the finale, so this is your last chance to turn back.

During an on-stage interview at the Milan Games Week in Italy, Baker explained having a son changed his perspective on The Last Of Usclimax.

“When we were making Part 1, I was at a disadvantage to Neil, because [he] was [already] a father [while] I just was acting. This was a very real possibility for him — what do I look like in the event that I lose my daughter,” Baker said.

Of course, Baker is alluding to the moment when Joel saves his adopted daughter Ellie by murdering an entire building full of innocent people. Ellie’s blood potentially contains a cure for the fungal infection that’s wiped out most of humanity, and she consensually agrees to an operation that’ll end her life.

“And I have a son, and I don’t know what I would look like if I lost him, but I do know that if I had the opportunity to save him — I would do anything to save him,” Baker continues. “So people have asked me, ‘why would Joel do that when he could have saved the world?’ and my answer to them is always this — he did, he did save the world. It’s just that the world was that girl, and that’s it.”

If you’re still reading this and haven’t played The Last Of Us, a PS5 remake came out earlier this year. GLHF has several guides for it as well, including every safe code combination.
