Troubled Notts County get pre-season campaign underway with victory at Nuneaton

Notts County opened their pre-season campaign with a 2-0 victory over Evo-Stik outfit Nuneaton Borough  this afternoon.

Second-half strikes from Mitch Rose and Kristian Dennis sealed the win for the Magpies who included trialists Kyel Reid and Dion Kelly-Jones in their line-up.

Reid was at Chesterfield last year while Kelly-Jones was previously at Coventry and both were hoping to impress boss Neal Ardley.

They started the first half of the clash at Liberty Way which saw Ardley name a largely young team which did include experienced midfielder Michael Doyle.

The closest either side came to scoring came when Callum Powell rattled the crossbar from just inside the box before Ross Fitzsimons saved well from Alex Henshall.

Kane Hemmings did force Cam Belford into a stop but in truth the Nuneaton goalkeeper was rarely tested.

But with the senior players on at the break, such as Enzio Boldewijn and Matt Tootle, Notts improved their level of threat and they took the lead when Rose drilled in from 25 yards.

Kristian Dennis then rattled the bar with a thunderous effort before Remaye Campbell missed a simple header at the back post to double the lead.

Campbell should have got on the scoresheet again when he somehow fired tamely at an open goal which allowed Belford to claw his effort off the line.

But Dennis eventually put greater daylight between the sides as he latched onto a poor back pass before applying a cool finish.
